The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 104

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 104

Chapter 104

He paused after speaking, looking like he was out of options.

“Do you still think I’m a Scrooge now?”

Madeleine blinked a couple of times, took a deep breath, and

said, “Do you think there’s any chance I could take Gerry’s

position?”

“No.”

“So certain!?”

“Gerry graduated from Harvard Business School, is fluent in five

languages, and worked at an investment bank on Wall Street

for two years after graduating.”

Roderick’s tone was calm, but every item on the resume he just

listed would be a huge highlight for an ordinary person.

And yet, Gerry managed to collect them all by himself!

Madeleine clicked her tongue in amazement.

No wonder his salary is high and his benefits are good.

Roderick raised his hand and patted her head. “Go to sleep

now.”

“No, I want to be with you.”

“Sleep together?”

Madeleine’s eyes widened. “What? I mean I’ll stay with you in

the study for a while.”

After saying that, she pushed the door open and went in.

“Don’t worry, you do your work, I’ll entertain myself.”

After entering, she saw the sofa in the study, and Madeleine

glanced at it a couple of times, feeling something was off.

Why does the sofa look like it’s been changed? It’s bigger than

last time, isn’t it?

Roderick really did have work to do. Seeing Madeleine grab a

couple of books from the bookshelf and go to the sofa to read, he deliberately turned on the floor lamp by the sofa.

The night deepened, and a light drizzle began to fall outside the window. The raindrops gently tapped against the glass, making

soft, fragmented sounds.

In the study, the only sounds were the faint tapping of

Roderick’s fingertips on the keyboard and the occasional rustle

of paper being turned.

Madeleine was curled up on the large sofa, a book lying open

on her lap. The warm yellow light shone on the side of her face,

casting a small shadow beneath her eyelashes.

She was reading intently, every now and then tracing her finger

lightly across the page, like she was thinking something over.

Roderick stopped what he was doing and looked up at her.

The sound of the rain made the room feel even quieter, and the

sight of Madeleine reading peacefully was like a painting,

softening a corner of his heart.

In that moment, Roderick felt very happy.

He finished his work at eleven, shut down his computer, and

walked over to Madeleine. She had already fallen asleep, the

book resting on her.

But she wasn’t sleeping soundly, and she opened her drowsy

eyes as soon as Roderick got close.

“Mmm, are you done?”

Chapter 104

“Yeah. Let’s go to bed.”

Roderick reached for the book in her hands, and she

immediately sat up straight, forcing herself to be alert.

“Wait, wait! I have a few questions for you. Now that you’re

finished, you can tell me about them.”

Roderick glanced at the book’s title: Graham’s “The Intelligent

Investor.”

He smiled and sat down next to Madeleine.

“Trying to learn about investing, huh?”

“Just thought I’d learn a little something.”

As she spoke, Madeleine flipped to the parts she didn’t

understand and started asking him about them.

Roderick had practical experience, so his explanations were

clear and simple. Madeleine, who was confused at first,

gradually started to understand.

“This book is pretty old. The examples are all about railroad and

coal stocks, which aren’t the mainstream investments these

days. It’s a bit out of touch. I’ll have someone bring you some

newer books tomorrow.”

“Great!”

Madeleine’s eyes lit up, her face full of excitement and a desire

to learn.

Seeing that she was no longer sleepy, Roderick went and got a couple of books for himself, planning to read with her for a while longer.

Half an hour later, Madeleine had fallen asleep again, her head resting on his shoulder.

Roderick smiled, chuckling softly as he scooped her up in his

arms and carried her to the master bedroom.

Since Madeleine lost her memory, everything in the bedroom had been changed to how she used to like it.

She liked blue, so everything from the bedding to the carpet and curtains was swapped out.

It wasn’t just Madeleine; Roderick felt much more comfortable

looking at it too.

He gently placed Madeleine on the bed, the mattress dipping

slightly. Just as Roderick was about to pull his hand back, the

woman in his arms woke up.

“Huh, how did I fall asleep again?”

Madeleine’s voice was muffled, and her eyes were a bit hazy.

Roderick looked down at her. Her cheeks were still faintly

flushed, her hair was spread across the pillow, and the collar of her pajamas was slightly open, revealing a delicate collarbone.
