The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 81

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 81

Chapter 81

Ricki had been like that his whole life. He wasn’t as mischievous

as when he was a kid, but his core personality hadn’t changed.

Still just as competitive!

“Mommy.”

Kevin tugged on Madeleine’s hand. “The fishies look like they’re

falling asleep.”

Madeleine snapped back to reality and looked.

Oh no, oh no!

The fat Koi Carp were so stuffed they were floating belly–up

Roderick appeared behind her, reaching past her to take the fish

food.

“They’re not sleeping. These fish are about to die.”

Kevin looked up, horrified.

“Dead?

Chapter 81

Why?”

“Because Koi Carp can’t handle anything sour. Too much of it

will kill them.”

Kevin stared doubtfully at the fish food in his dad’s hand.

“But Dad, is the fish food sour?”

Roderick held back a laugh. “The food isn’t, but the air is.”

At first, Madeleine was confused and had no idea what

nonsense Roderick was talking about.

But then it clicked.

Hey, he was obviously saying she was the one being sour.

Nonsense, she wasn’t being sour at all!

With that thought, Madeleine huffed and turned around.

She didn’t realize they were so close, and as she moved, the top

of her head slammed right into Roderick’s chin.

Roderick: …

He’d calculated the distance perfectly. He’d stand right here,

Chapter 81

she’d turn and bump into him, and he could smoothly catch her

in his arms…

“Ouch.”

Madeleine was the one who yelped, clutching her head and

blaming Roderick for standing too close.

Roderick took two steps back without a word, just raising a

hand to rub his chin.

That really hurt.

“What are you doing here? Done with your important business?”

Roderick was exasperated. “Rebecca is the daughter of a

company director. Her father and my dad have been business

partners for years, and Rebecca holds an important position at

the company. She was here to talk business.”

It sounded like an explanation, but the way he kept saying

“Rebecca” made Madeleine uncomfortable.

But she couldn’t let it show. If she did, it would just prove

Roderick right about her being sour.

No way. Absolutely not.

Chapter 81

She wouldn’t admit it.

Only Kevin was still worried about the Koi Carp, squatting by the

pond with a concerned look on his face.

“Little fish, little fish, are you guys okay?”

“Are you dead?”

Madeleine turned back and squatted guiltily beside Kevin.

She asked Roderick worriedly, “They aren’t really going to die,

are they?”

“No, they’re just having some indigestion. Come on, we should

head back for dinner.”

“Head back?

We’re not eating here?”

Roderick nodded.

The staff had already prepared a full table of food, but Roderick

turned down the offer to stay.

Rebecca and Madeleine already didn’t get along, so it was best

to minimize their contact.

Chapter 81

Before leaving, Roderick took another look at the fat Koi Carp in

the pond.

Hmm… I’ll ask the old man later how many died. I’ll have

someone send over some more.

While they were out for dinner, Madeleine was bursting with

questions for Roderick.

Like how Owen got together with Mrs. Miller.

And why Rebecca didn’t like her.

And… what her past relationship with Roderick was really like.

But most of these questions weren’t exactly G–rated, so every

time Madeleine wanted to ask, she would glance over at her

son.

Never mind. For the sake of her little boy’s well–being, she’d just

have to hold back.

Roderick sat across from the mother and son, eating elegantly,

pretending not to notice Madeleine squirming in her seat.

He guessed what was on her mind, but with his son there, he

Chapter 81

didn’t bring it up either.

He slowly cut his steak, a faint smile playing on his lips.

When Madeleine went to the restroom, Kevin hopped off his

chair and snuck over to Roderick’s side.

“Dad, let me tell you a secret.”

“Hmm?”

Kevin beckoned for his dad to lean closer, cupping a small hand

to his mouth.

“Mommy was just peeking at you.”

Roderick couldn’t help but smile. “You saw that?”

“Yeah!

Mommy was being sneaky, so I waited until she left to tell you.”

Roderick smiled and patted his son’s head.

“Dad, I know you want Mommy to like you, right? You should eat

more meat. Mommy likes strong guys.”

Roderick’s smile faded a little.

Chapter 81

Little rascal, still hung up on that.

His expression turned serious. He pulled Kevin closer and said,

“You can say that stuff to me, but don’t say it to anyone else.”

“What stuff?”

“Like… that Dad isn’t strong, or that I’m not good enough.”

“Oh, okay.”

The little guy nodded seriously. “Got it, Dad.”

With that, he quietly returned to his seat to eat.

Later that evening, the family returned to the villa.

Roderick saw how eager Madeleine was to get home and

thought she couldn’t wait to have a good long talk with him.
