Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 67
Chapter 67
The fireworks reflected in her eyes, flickering between light and
shadow, just like his heart at that moment.
He’d seen everything that just happened. He could tell
Madeleine was rejecting Edward.
It was because Madeleine had lost her memories of falling for
Edward over the past few years.
Her rejection of Edward now was real, but her infatuation with
him before she lost her memory was also real.
If one day she gets her memory back…
Roderick didn’t dare to think about it, his fingers tightening
unconsciously.
“Ah…”
Madeleine winced and looked down. Only then did Roderick
instinctively loosen his grip; he’d forgotten their fingers were
intertwined.
“Daddy, you hurt Mommy.”
Chapter 67
Kevin scolded his dad, grabbing Madeleine’s hand and blowing
on it gently.
“I’ll kiss it better, Mommy, so it doesn’t hurt. I’ll blow on it for
you.”
“It’s okay, Kev, Mommy’s not hurt.”
After Madeleine spoke, her gaze quickly swept over Roderick.
The fireworks changed patterns again, and gasps of awe rose from the crowd. The two of them acted as if nothing had
happened and looked up.
Roderick’s mind stirred. She had taken his hand on her own just
now.
Now that she’d let go, would she refuse if he reached out
again?
Roderick’s eyes fell on her again. Madeleine’s brow was slightly
furrowed; she was clearly lost in thought.
Roderick knew what she was thinking about.
In the haunted house just now, the way she looked at him was
filled with unease and confusion.
Chapter 67
She was worried he didn’t trust her.
How could he not trust her?
He just… didn’t trust himself.
Didn’t trust that he could ever mean more to her than Edward.
Didn’t trust how long this stolen happiness would last.
“Roderick.”
Madeleine suddenly turned her head and spoke, her voice so
soft it was almost drowned out by the fireworks, “In the
haunted house just now, I don’t know why Ed…”
“I know.”
Roderick cut her off, not wanting to hear her difficult
explanation, “Edward planned it on purpose.”
Madeleine was surprised at first, then frowned slightly, “No, I
was trying to say, just now my body felt like…”
Halfway through her sentence, another booming firework went
off, cutting her off.
Madeleine stopped abruptly. Who would believe her if she said

something like that?
Even she thought it was absurd.
But Roderick misunderstood her pause, and his heart felt like it
had been stabbed.
Just as he thought. She still cared about Edward. Even with
amnesia, her body’s instincts didn’t lie.
“Mommy!”
Kevin suddenly pointed at the sky, “The biggest firework is
coming!”
A huge firework exploded in the night sky, illuminating their
three faces.
Roderick used the dazzling light to sneak a look at Madeleine’s
profile.
Her long eyelashes trembled, the tip of her nose was still
slightly red from the earlier scare, but her lips were a little pale.
Seeing her like this made his heart ache so much he could
barely breathe.
If… if she chose to leave after getting her memory back, what
Chapter 67
would he do?
The thought coiled around Roderick’s heart like a venomous
snake.
He remembered the look in Madeleine’s eyes when she looked
at Edward before her amnesia–that reckless obsession, that
moth–to–a–flame persistence.
And he could only ever stand in the shadows, watching her be
crazy about someone else.
When the fireworks ended, Madeleine walked out beside
Roderick. The little one excitedly chattered about the
spectacular fireworks show, and the two of them just listened
with a smile.
In the car on the way back, Kevin was tired from playing and
quickly fell fast asleep in his car seat.
The car fell silent for a moment, with only the soft hum of the
air conditioner.
Madeleine turned her head to look at Roderick again and finally
mustered the courage to speak, “Ricki, I want to talk to you
when we get back.”
Chapter 67
Roderick’s whole body tensed up, and his voice was deep and
heavily suppressed.
Despite that, he still maintained his usual gentleness,
“Tomorrow. It’s late today.”
Madeleine opened her mouth, but in the end, she didn’t insist.
The two didn’t speak again until they got back to the villa.
Madeleine wanted Roderick to carry the child to the master
bedroom to sleep with her, but Roderick said they needed to
teach the child to sleep independently and carried him to the
kids‘ room.
He didn’t mention that the kids‘ room had 24–hour smart
monitoring, which would make it easier to watch out for Kevin
having nightmares or talking in his sleep.
The night grew deep.
A few bird calls came from outside the window. Madeleine
tossed and turned in the large bed, unable to fall asleep.
Whenever she closed her eyes, she would remember that
moment in Edward’s arms.
