Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 65
Chapter 65
Roderick’s expression darkened.
Gerry finished, thought it over for a second, and then added, “Do
you want me to follow up on it?”
“Yeah. If you find anything suspicious, report it immediately.”
“Okay. If all goes to plan, Isabela’s son won’t be leaving the
country.”
When people of his status start moving capital overseas, it usually means a huge scandal is about to break.
Fleeing abroad before things go south and leaving the mess
behind—it’s a classic vanishing act.
You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that Isabela’s family
must have pissed off the CEO.
After what happened with Dannie, Roderick was worried
Madeleine was upset and asked if she wanted to head back.
“Go back?”
Chapter 65
Madeleine said, shaking her head.
“I’m not done having fun yet. What about you, Kev? Are you
done?”
Kevin hesitated. He wanted to keep playing, of course, but just like his dad, he felt bad about his mom getting hurt.
“I’m really okay. It’s just a small bruise. You’ve seen how many times I’ve gotten hurt from dancing, right? It’s nothing. There
are still a bunch of rides I haven’t been on yet.”
The father and son couldn’t resist Madeleine’s pleading. The moment she batted her big, watery eyes, they both gave in.
Madeleine was thrilled and dragged them along to two more
rides.
As it got dark, the three of them passed a haunted house.
Madeleine stopped in her tracks, a little hesitant.
“Kev, are you brave enough for the haunted house?”
“A haunted house?
Mom, ghosts aren’t real.”
Chapter 65
“Uh, true, but what about you, Ricki? You dare?”
Roderick shook his head, the corners of his lips twitching into a
smile.
He knew that Madeleine had been terrified of ‘ghosts and
ghouls since she was a kid. Back then, he used to tell her ghost
stories on purpose, just to keep her up at night.
Roderick watched as Madeleine tried to pretend she was calm,
even though she was obviously terrified, and a flicker of
amusement crossed his eyes.
He bent down, picked up Kevin, and said to Madeleine, “Let’s
Madeleine took a deep breath and forced herself to follow.
A cold wind gusted at the entrance to the haunted house, and
creepy sound effects echoed from all around. Madeleine’s heart
began to pound, and she instinctively grabbed the hem of
Roderick’s shirt.
It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s all fake. Nothing to be afraid of!
Madeleine swallowed hard, squeezing her eyes shut and
repeating the mantra in her head.
!
Chapter 65
“Don’t be scared.”
Roderick looked back and whispered, “It’s just some machinery.
If you’re scared, close your eyes and follow me.”
Madeleine nodded, but then she stepped on something,
stumbled, and let go. She opened her eyes just as a blood-
covered “zombie” dropped from the ceiling, its rotting fingers
almost touching the tip of her nose.
“Ah!
!”
Madeleine’s scream nearly tore the roof off.
She instinctively tried to back away, but just then, she felt
someone push her hard from behind.
As she lost her balance, she frantically grabbed someone’s arm
ashed right into their chest.
Madeleine was too panicked to think, and a scream was the
only thing that escaped her lips.
Was it Roderick?
Chapter 65
Why wasn’t Roderick holding our son!
It took Madeleine a moment to come to her senses, realizing
the scent filling her nose wasn’t Roderick’s familiar one, but…
that sandalwood fragrance.
A terrible feeling instantly exploded in Madeleine’s chest.
“So eager?”
The man’s voice came from above her head, laced with a hint of
a smirk.
Madeleine looked up, and in the dim light, Edward’s eyes were filled with mockery.
This was a real nightmare!
Madeleine felt like her heart had stopped for two seconds.
“If you’d kept up the act for a few more days, I might have
actually believed you. Tsk, still so eager to throw yourself at me
the moment you see me. How interesting.”
Edward narrowed his eyes, his gaze filled with confidence and disgust for Madeleine.
What the hell was this!
Chapter 65
Madeleine felt a wave of nausea and wanted to push Edward
away.
But for some reason, the moment she had that thought, it was
like a needle pricked her brain.
It hurts so much…
Madeleine’s face changed, and her whole body uncontrollably
stiffened, unable to move.
Edward couldn’t see Madeleine’s expression clearly. From his
angle, he could only see her whole body still leaning against
him, unwilling to leave.
What a boring woman.
And to think he thought she was somewhat interesting, even
going to all the trouble of coming to some amusement park.
Such a waste of time.
Madeleine clenched her jaw, her nails digging deep into her
palm. The sharp pain finally allowed her to regain control of her
body.
