The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 12

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 12

At past 6 a.m., the day had just broken.

Gerry drove Roderick to the hotel where Madeleine and Kevin

were staying.

The bank card Madeleine had swiped was under Roderick’s

name, and he had a marriage certificate. After verifying his

identity, the receptionist gave him a key card.

“Mr. Livingston.”

Gerry didn’t have the heart to do it.

“Can I wait for you downstairs?”

It wasn’t that he flinched. This was a most humiliating moment

for his boss, after all. And Roderick was a proud man. Gerry

figured he didn’t want an outsider to see it.

Roderick knew what Gerry was thinking.

After a pause, he nodded, “OK.”

The elevator ascended slowly. With each floor it went up,

Roderick’s heart sank further.

It was over.

It was finally gonna be over between him and Madeleine.

Gone with the wind were his youth and soul in this foreign land.

Silly him. Why did he devote his heart to this relationship in the

first place? Madeleine never cherished him.

He had flattered himself.

Roderick’s footsteps made no sound on the carpeted hallway.

He came to Madeleine. Kevin was nowhere to be seen outside.

Roderick figured he must be inside.

Holding the key card, his hand trembled slightly. It felt like a

knife, with which he was gonna cut his own festering wound

open.

With a beep, the door was unlocked.

Holding his breath, Roderick pushed the door open and walked

With the curtains drawn, the room was pitch–black. Roderick

walked on after his eyes had adapted to the darkness a few

seconds later.

He was mentally prepared to witness an obscene scene.

When he moved to the bed, however, he was dumbstruck.

Only Madeleine and Kevin were lying on the bed. The mother and son were sound asleep, hugging each other.

Roderick frowned in confusion. She didn’t meet with Edward

after landing?

Just then, Kevin suddenly winced, curled up in fright, and

trembled all over.

The boy was having a nightmare.

Roderick hurried over, cautiously picked Kevin up, and softly

called him to wake him up.

This psychological problem of Kevin’s had existed for a long time. Nightmares happened every night after he fell asleep. More often than not, he was too frightened to go back to sleep.

Roderick had traveled around to take him to the doctors and

had contacted the best child psychiatrist. Disappointingly,

however, few achievements were made in the end.

Kevin bit his lower lip tightly until it bled.

Without thinking about it, Roderick put his index finger into the

boy’s mouth.

“Kevin, Kevin, wake up. It’s Dad.”

Roderick lost his cool. The doctor had said falling into a

nightmare could be horrifying for a child. If he couldn’t be

woken up in time, he might be severely traumatized.

What was worse, Kevin had psychological problems in the first

place.

Madeleine woke up from the noise. Thinking that it was a

dream, she turned and went back to sleep.

Realizing the emptiness on the other side of the bed, she woke

up with a start.

Where was Kevin?

Madeleine opened her eyes and saw Roderick standing beside

the bed. Spooked, she opened her mouth to scream.

“Be quiet.”

Roderick hushed her by covering her mouth before she could

make a sound.

Like a sleepwalker, one having a nightmare couldn’t be alarmed.

It was too hazardous.

Madeleine gaped in shock, her heart racing.

Was this a dream? She was abroad. Why did she wake up with

Roderick standing by her bed?

Meeting his solemn eyes, Madeleine raised her hands to tell

him she’d calmed down. Roderick finally let her go.

“Why are you here?” Madeleine asked in a whisper.

That was when she noticed something was wrong with Kevin.

She got up hurriedly.

“What’s wrong with Kev?”

Frowning, Roderick retorted coldly, “You don’t know?”

Madeleine blinked. “I told you I lost my memory.”

This excuse again. Roderick didn’t believe her. He said flintily,

“He’s having a nightmare. We must wake him up as soon as

possible.”

“Oh, poor baby. He’s just a little boy. Why is he having a

nightmare?”

Instinctively, Madeleine took Kevin from Roderick and

murmured in his ear.

“Kev, wake up. Don’t be afraid. Mommy is here.”

Her voice was so gentle.

Thinking he must’ve misheard, Roderick stared at her in

disbelief.

She was the cause of their son’s nightmares and psychological

problems.

She was never nice to the boy.

Sure enough, a mother’s voice was the best cure. Hearing

Madeleine’s murmurs, the trembling Keven suddenly calmed

down in her arms.

He let out a long sigh and opened his eyes slowly.
