I chose my words carefully. I thought that if I showed obedience, and removed myself from the situation, this would end here. But instead of easing, the pressure in the air grew heavier.

My father’s eyes darkened, the faint amusement vanishing completely. The temperature around us seemed to drop, his presence suddenly more oppressive. I had the sickening realization that my explanation hadn’t calmed him at all.

It had done the opposite.

Before he could speak, a soft chuckle drifted through the silence.

I stiffened and looked past him.

Leaning casually against the wall behind Hades was Sierra. A drink rested in one hand, her short red dress hugging her figure perfectly. I hadn’t even noticed when she arrived. When our eyes met, hers sparkled with open mockery, as though she were watching a particularly entertaining drama unfold.

“Wow,” she said, lifting her glass a little. “Nephew, are you trying to dig your grave faster, or are you just naturally talented at it?”

My brows knit together in confusion and unease.

When did she get here? No, that wasn’t the important part. What did she mean by that?

Before I could ask, or even react, movement behind me caught my attention.

“M-Mr. Sinclair.”

Nora’s voice trembled as she stepped forward. The entire room turned to her. She looked pale, and desperate, her hands clenched tightly at her sides as if she were holding herself together. Her eyes flicked between my father and Violet before finally settling on him.

“It’s not Matthew’s fault,” she said quickly, pointing straight at Violet. “It’s hers. She’s the one who caused this scene on your wedding day!”

Hades finally shifted his gaze as if he had just noticed Nora’s existence for the first time this evening.

My eyes widened at her outburst. I stared at Nora in disbelief. I’d known her for years, or thought I did, but I had never seen this side of her before. She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t flinch. She threw Violet under the bus without a second thought, as if it came naturally to her.

Where was the sweet woman who wouldn’t hurt a fly?

What terrified me most was that she didn’t even seem to care that I was watching. Whatever this was, it wasn’t just her business, it had become her mission. And her mission was to make Violet’s life hell.

“This bitch is a slut,” Nora spat. “She’s not good enough to be part of the Sinclair family. But because she seduced your son, he can’t let her go. He’s fallen for her tricks.” She turned fully to my father now, desperation flashing in her eyes. “Mr. Sinclair, please. Do something. Chase this girl away. You have to make things right.”

The moment she finished speaking, Hades’ lips curled upward, and my blood ran cold.

That smile, God, I knew that smile; I had seen it too many times, and that wasn’t amusement or interest, it was rage so deep my father only smiled like that when someone had already crossed the line and didn’t even realize they were dead yet.

Nora must have sensed it too, because her confidence shattered in an instant. She took a step back in fear, but her heel caught on the edge of the carpet. She stumbled and fell hard onto the floor, her body trembling as she scrambled back, staring up at him like prey.

Hades looked down at her, and his voice was calm.

“Not good enough to be part of the Sinclair family?” he repeated slowly. “Seduce my son? Chase her away?” His

eyes darkened, the air around him turning heavy. “It seems none of you truly value your lives anymore.”

I felt my chest tighten.

He looked away from Nora then, as if she had already ceased to exist, and turned his gaze past me. Instantly, I knew who he was looking at.

“Princess,” he said lazily, his deep voice carrying through the room. “How long are you planning to stand there quietly enjoying the scene? Their stupidity is starting to irritate me.”

Princess?

My body froze.

No. No, no, no.

A horrible realization crawled up my spine as I turned back.

Violet stood there, calm and unbothered, a faint smile playing on her lips. She looked like she was watching a movie. When our eyes met, something inside me shattered.

She smiled.

“I just wanted to see how far stupid people could go,” she said. “But then again, I’m not surprised. Stupid people will always be stupid.”

My stomach dropped.

She placed her hand on Sebastian’s wheelchair and began walking, straight past me, and straight toward

Hades.

Instinctively, my hand twitched. I wanted to stop her, grab her wrist, and pull her back, but something deep in my bones screamed at me not to. I knew, with terrifying certainty, that if I touched her now, I would never

use that hand again.

I stood there, powerless, as she reached him.

Hades didn’t hesitate for even a second.

His arm wrapped around her waist immediately, pulling her into him with an ease that spoke of familiarity, and possession. He lowered his head, pressing his face into her hair, inhaling like he had been starved of her scent. The gesture was intimate, and natural.

The room exploded into gasps when they saw the scene. People froze, their mouths hung open.

Violet turned her head slightly, her amused gaze sweeping across the crowd, her expression radiant.

“To finish my sentence,” she said clearly, her voice echoing through the stunned silence, “I don’t need an invitation.”

She paused, her lips curling. “Because what kind of bride would need an invitation to her own wedding?”

The world tilted. My face drained of color. My legs staggered back as the words finally sank in, crashing into me like a fucking truck.

“Fuck,” I breathed, the sound barely leaving my throat as everything I thought I knew collapsed right in front of me.
