Craving the Guardian Novel Chapter 156

Nights Burn With Regret — by Nathan Perez 156

Chapter 156

Chapter 156

Violet

There are two people. One is the victim. The other is the predator.

The predator destroys the victim’s family, steals everything from him, and leaves him with nothing. Everyone calls the predator a monster, because that’s exactly what he is.

But then anger grows. The victim finally decides he’s done being prey. He steps out of that role and chooses to become the predator instead. He hunts down the monster who ruined him. He kills the predator’s family, takes everything the predator loves, and gives him the same agony he once suffered.

And suddenly, people start to talk.

Would they still remember who struck first?

Would they remember the monster that created this cycle?

Or would they turn on the victim, label him the monster, and pretend the true predator was ever a victim at all?

Does the world simply flip the roles, and forget the truth?

“An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. What goes around comes around. People don’t stop unless they’re made to understand the cost of messing with you. And since they started it, you make sure you end it in the most satisfying way possible.”

“Just because you fix something on your own doesn’t mean the way you fix it is always right. Sometimes, when you’re desperate to survive, you end up becoming too much like the people who tried to bury you. You end up becoming a

monster.”

Two brothers. Two different beliefs.

Who was right and who was wrong?

I didn’t know, and I didn’t care. What I did know was that I was done listening to others. I was done letting anyone decide for

From now on, I would decide what was right, and what was wrong.

I looked at Roman, couldn’t help myself, and scoffed. “Way to fix things? How exactly do you want me to fix things, sir? Go into the room and let history repeat itself by letting Nora and all of them get their way again?”

Roman didn’t react to my words. He remained calm, “I’m not saying that. I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you anymore.” He said. “I already fixed everything before you came. You didn’t have to stoop to their level or get yourself involved with them, Violet.”

I blinked at him, my irritation spiking. “Are you saying I should have just sat down and let you take care of things?”

He put his hands in his pockets, his gaze steady as he looked at me. “Yes. That’s what I’m saying. You didn’t have to let Hades influence you by acting irrationally. I don’t want you to be influenced by him. This is not who you are.”

Who I am?

My lips twitched in frustration. I crossed my arms tightly over my chest. “Mr. Roman, with all due respect, I am not a pampered princess who needs anyone’s protection. And if you think this is not who I am, then you don’t know who I am.”

I took a breath to calm myself before continuing. “Most of all, you’re acting like Hades is a monster who can’t control his

emotions and gets angry every time. He is not that. Just because you are both different doesn’t mean Hades is evil.

I forced myself to control my temper. He was worried about me, and I couldn’t fault him for that, but it grated on me when people didn’t see Hades for who he truly was. I thought about how I had once considered him a monster, and a bad influence. But he had never once told me what to do. He always wanted me to make my own decisions. He treated me well. He protected me every time I needed it.

Hades Sinclair was not a devil.

I didn’t know why I was defending him so fiercely, or why I felt so protective of him, but it didn’t matter. What mattered was that no one, not even the man I respected the most, would talk about my husband that way in front of me.

Roman looked at me with a strange expression, but I didn’t dwell on it.

I shook my head slightly and said, “I have to go. I can’t stay late, after all, I’m someone’s wife now.”

Roman’s gaze didn’t waver, though a subtle flicker passed through his eyes. He didn’t look angry, and he didn’t look disappointed.

I didn’t care.

“Goodbye, sir.” I turned and started to leave, the tension easing slightly from my shoulders.

“You trust him too well, Violet. It’s just like she did back then,” Roman cut in.

I paused, confused. “What?”

“I don’t want you to get hurt like she did.”

I was even more confused, my brows knitting together.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, my voice barely steady.

He looked at me with that same intense expression. “Do you want to know why I hate my brother and don’t trust him?”

I froze, staring at him. My mind screamed at me to say ignore him, to turn and walk away, but I couldn’t. Something about the way he looked at me demanded my attention. Even though I was married to Hades, I realized I knew almost nothing about him, nothing about the depths of the man he truly was.

There were pieces he kept hidden, secrets I hadn’t even begun to understand. My curiosity overpowered every cautious thought in my head.

I swallowed hard. “Why?”

Roman stepped closer, and this time, I didn’t move back. I had to hear him.

I had to understand the kind of man Hades Sinclair really was.

亭亭亭

I stepped out of the school building into the cold wind, shivering as it brushed against my face. People passed by, whispering and glancing at me, but I barely noticed them. My mind was spinning, thoughts tumbling over each other, my heart pounding in my chest. Every step felt heavy, like I was moving through a fog.

“Violet, Violet, Violet!”

At first, I didn’t respond, then a gentle tap on my shoulder made me flinch. I turned to see Penelope, worry written across

her face.

“Huh?” I muttered, still feeling dazed.

Penelope raised an eyebrow. “Hey, what’s wrong?”

I blinked at them, trying to gather myself, and only then did I fully notice my surroundings, and my friends.

Kai stepped forward. “Are you okay? We’ve been calling you.”

Penelope nodded. “Yeah, did something happen with Professor Roman? You look absentminded.”

I looked at them, at the worry in their eyes, and for a moment, I couldn’t find the words. Finally, I nodded, forcing a small smile, though it felt hollow. “I-I’m fine.”

Penelope didn’t look convinced. “For real?”

I nodded again. “Yes. I just want to go home. Sorry, guys. I know you probably had a little celebration planned, can we do it another time?”

Kai and Penelope exchanged worried glances before turning back to me.

Kai’s voice was gentle. “It’s okay. Come on. Let me take you home.”

Penelope linked her arm with mine, guiding me toward the car. But no matter how much I tried to focus on my friends’ care, my thoughts kept drifting back to Roman’s words, replaying in my head.

“Do you want to know why I hate my brother and don’t trust him?”

“It’s because Hades killed our mother, the only woman who ever loved us. He’s a cold.hearted murderer, someone incapable of loving anyone. No matter what you think, no matter what he says, he doesn’t love you and never will. A man like that doesn’t even know what that word means. Loving him will only get you killed.”
