I took a breath, trying not to react. “Me? I’m making things hard for you? You’re the one who left. You packed your things, and disappeared. No text, no call, nothing. I understand you’re angry, but I’m your boyfriend for Christ’s sake. You should be a little more considerate. I’ve been worried about you!”

A crowd had formed. Students were gathered at a distance, some pretending not to watch, others blatantly filming or whispering behind their hands. Among them, I could see Nora standing beside Riley. But none of it mattered. All I could see was Violet.
She scoffed, that bitter smile on her lips.
“Boyfriend? Worried?” she repeated. “You weren’t worried two nights when you let me drown and saved her.”
“You weren’t worried when you told me to go home alone, she said, louder. “And don’t give me that crap. What part of we’re over don’t you understand? I’m done with Mathew. I’m done with your games. I won’t let you treat me like a second choice anymore, so please, leave me alone”
She turned.
My vision blurred for a second with a rage. She was walking away again. Before she could take another step, I grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
I leaned in, just enough that our faces were inches apart. I was close enough to smell the faint scent of her shampoo, the one I knew she used because I bought it for her.
“We are not over,” I said, my voice low. “You hear me, Violet? We can never be over. So watch your mouth. If you’re angry, fine. Be angry. But don’t say things like that.”
“No matter what you feel, you’re mine.”
