Scarlett was already gone.

With no idea where she might be, Damian shoved his feet into the disposable hospital slippers and walked out into the hallway.

He wandered, looking for her, and his steps eventually brought him to the doorway of an outpatient infusion room.

The door stood slightly open. From inside, he heard voices–Scarlett’s and Nolan’s.

Nolan was saying, “Scarlett, try a bit of this oatmeal. It’s good.”

Scarlett replied, “It’s okay, Nolan. I’m not hungry.”

“Just a spoonful? Here, let me.”

Scarlett seemed about to refuse again, but before any words came out, the infusion room door was kicked inward with a sharp bang.

Startled, Scarlett turned. Damian stood framed in the doorway, backlit by the hall lights so his face was in shadow.

But she didn’t need to see his expression to feel the anger rolling off him in waves.

A second later, he was striding toward her.

As he moved into the light, his face became clear–and the rage etched there was unmistakable.

Scarlett didn’t even have time to speak before Damian snapped, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re something else, Scarlett. Playing the field with three different men?”

Scarlett’s brows drew together. “I am not. Stop making things up.”

Seeing her denial, Damian’s gaze dropped pointedly to her hand. “Then what’s this? Why are you holding another man’s hand?”

Scarlett looked down.

Nolan was, indeed, holding her hand.

As if challenged by Damian’s attention, Nolan’s grip tightened. He looked up, meeting Damian’s glare squarely. “You’re not the only one with feelings for her. I’m here, too.”

Hearing Nolan’s bold declaration, Damian scoffed, the sound harsh. “You don’t get to have

feelings for her.”

“Why not?” Nolan shot back, not backing down.

“Because I knew her first,” Damian said, the words gritted out. “And because she promised she’d

But before he could finish, the door was pushed open again, this time by a young nurse who looked harried.

“Mr. Langley,” she said urgently, “Mrs. Ruth Langley is awake. She’s asking for you.”

At the news that his mother was conscious, Damian’s argument with Nolan was instantly forgotten. With one last, searing glance at Scarlett, he turned and hurried out of the room.

Scarlett watched him go, a strange sense of relief washing over her. If he had stayed any longer, she dreaded what else might have been said.

She gently extracted her hand from Nolan’s, took a small step back, and said, “Nolan, I should go home.”

Nolan stood. “I’ll drive you.”

Instinctively, Scarlett resisted. “You need to rest. I can take a cab.”

But Nolan was insistent. “I won’t be able to rest if I’m worrying about you getting home safe. Please.”

Hearing the quiet determination in his voice, Scarlett relented. If she refused, he’d likely just follow her anyway.

Nolan drove her back to Theron Manor in silence and left without another word once she was at the door.

Scarlett was grateful for the quiet.

Back inside, the house was still. Only the staff was around. A deep, bone–weary exhaustion settled over her, and she went straight upstairs.

After a hot shower, she collapsed into bed, hoping for a few hours of solid sleep.

She had just begun to drift off when her phone rang on the nightstand.

Without even looking at the caller ID, she fumbled for it and answered, her voice rough with sleep. “Hello?”

Clara’s panicked yoice came through the line. “Auntie! It’s Vanessa! She fell at preschool! She’s

awake but… she says she can’t stand up!”

All drowsiness vanished. Scarlett was instantly awake, throwing back the covers and sitting bolt upright.

She dressed in a frenzy and drove toward the preschool, her heart hammering against her ribs.

When she arrived, a cluster of children near the gate pointed and called out, “Vanessa’s mom is here!”

Scarlett didn’t stop to explain or correct them. She hurried straight inside.

The children in the hallway parted to let her through.

Vanessa wasn’t unconscious. She was lying on a mat in the nurse’s office, crying hard—loud, scared sobs that tore at Scarlett’s heart. Several teachers stood nearby, looking anxious, not daring to move her.

Without a second thought for her own recent surgery and the physical strain, Scarlett knelt and carefully gathered Vanessa into her arms. Holding her close, she strode back out of the building.

In the back of the taxi, Scarlett kept up a steady stream of quiet questions, her professional training warring with maternal fear. She gently squeezed Vanessa’s small fingers. “Does this hurt, sweetie? Can you feel me touching your toes?”

Vanessa, nestled against her, continued to cry, her small body shaking. She shook her head. “It doesn’t hurt… It feels tingly and sleepy.”

Even through her tears, she was trying to answer her mother’s questions.

The word “tingly” sent a fresh wave of alarm through Scarlett. “Driver, please, as fast as you can,” she said, her voice tight.

Vanessa burrowed her face into Scarlett’s neck, her cries softening to whimpers. “Mommy,” she mumbled, “my tummy hurts. And my head hurts, too.”
