Hearing this, the group murmured with polite disappointment before someone else inquired, “What is the primary focus of your research, Ms. Monroe?”

Sabrina knew everyone present was accomplished in the medical field and was aware her own credentials were modest. She avoided specifics, maintaining a calm smile. “A paper will be published in due course.”

Vincent, seated beside her, had naturally noticed Nolan’s subtle provocation. Once the brief curiosity about Sabrina subsided, he turned the tables with a tone of polite inquiry. “Dr. Huntley is considered a benchmark in our field. I presume the lady beside you must have an equally impressive background?”

As soon as he spoke, attention shifted back to Scarlett. Questions arose from around the table.

“Nolan, is this lady also one of Mr. Newman’s students? I don’t believe we’ve met.”

“Yes, which specialty does she pursue? Which hospital is she affiliated with now?”

When the focus turned to her, Nolan instinctively moved to intervene. But before he could speak, Scarlett addressed the room herself.

“Hello, everyone. My focus is pediatric surgery. Currently, I hold a bachelor’s degree and am preparing for graduate school admissions. I am not yet Mr. Newman’s student, but I hope to have the opportunity to earn that position.”

Scarlett held nothing back, stating her actual situation plainly. She believed that only by not fearing condescension could one avoid being belittled.

Vincent watched her from across the table, surprised. He hadn’t expected her to admit her circumstances so straightforwardly–to lay her current reality bare before this distinguished

group.

After Scarlett finished, the murmurs of reaction were more pronounced than before. Yet, these sounds mattered little to her.

Compared to the judgment of strangers, what stung more deeply was Vincent’s role in this- using her to deflect attention and bolster Sabrina’s position.

Around them, the whispered discussions grew louder.

“If she starts grad school now, she’ll be well into her thirties by the time she finishes a doctorate.”

“Exactly. If everything goes perfectly, maybe thirty–three. If not, she might not finish at all.”

“Does it even matter if she graduates? By then, she’d be… rather established. What prospects would she have?”

They spoke without restraint, unconcerned that Nolan sat beside her.

Observing Scarlett become the subject of derision, Sabrina allowed a faint, satisfied smile to touch her lips as she glanced across at Nolan.

Nolan, however, had turned his head, his attention wholly on gauging Scarlett’s reaction. In his eyes, only she existed.

Seeing this, Sabrina’s brow furrowed slightly.

The discussions continued. Scarlett remained outwardly composed, but feeling Nolan’s concerned gaze, she met his eyes. She offered him a small, reassuring smile. Before she could say anything, however, Nolan raised his voice slightly.

“Everyone, the lady beside me is actually my—”

Scarlett guessed his intention–to claim her as his partner to shield her. She spoke up, her voice clear and firm, overriding his, “Thank you for your interest. But in life, it’s never too late to pursue a new path.”

Across the table, both Vincent and Sabrina had also sensed what Nolan was about to declare. Scarlett’s interruption left a palpable silence in its wake.

Thomas, seated at the head of the table, observed everything. He, too, had understood Nolan’s unspoken intent, but he was more impressed by Scarlett’s response.

She hadn’t crumbled under the scrutiny or hidden behind someone else’s status. She had claimed her own ground. In Thomas‘ eyes, that integrity was paramount.

It was regrettable she didn’t seem inclined toward his prized student romantically. But matters of the heart were separate. He still saw great potential in her as a student.

As the room quieted, Thomas cleared his throat. “Everyone, Ms. Theron is the doctoral candidate I have personally earmarked a place for. Whether it takes three years or five, a position in my program will be held for her.”

His declaration sent a new wave of murmurs through the room.

“In all our years knowing the professor, he’s never reserved a spot for anyone beforehand.”

“Indeed. And for someone with just a bachelor’s degree…”

“If the professor says so, she must possess exceptional promise.”

“I thought there was something distinctly poised about her demeanor.”

With Thomas‘ endorsement, the perception of Scarlett shifted visibly.

Across the table, seeing both Nolan and Thomas rally to Scarlett’s defense, Sabrina slowly clenched her fist in her lap.

Vincent also recognized what Nolan had been about to say. The fact that Scarlett had stopped him sparked an unexpected, inexplicable flicker of satisfaction within him. He didn’t examine the feeling closely, but a thought whispered in the back of his mind. Perhaps she still only has eyes for me.
