Nathan didn’t hand the bags over. Keeping a straight face, he said, “I’ve got it. You should go sit down.”
Nathan and Violet had been the ones to handle Scarlett’s discharge paperwork that morning.
Afterwards, Violet had turned to Damian and said, “Thank you for looking after Scarlett. If you’re free, please join us for a simple lunch at the house.”
It was exactly the invitation Damian had hoped for, and he accepted without a second thought. But while some were pleased he was coming, others were not.
Nathan was distinctly unenthusiastic about Damian’s visit to Theron Manor.
Damian tried again to help, but Nathan wouldn’t budge.
After a brief, awkward standoff, Damian suddenly reached out and took the bags from Nathan’s hands. “Nonsense, you need the help,” he insisted, striding past him toward the kitchen with the groceries.
Nathan stood frozen in the entryway, momentarily stunned.
Just then, Violet came in from outside, her own arms full of bags. She had witnessed Damian taking the groceries from Nathan.
Waving a hand in front of her brother’s dazed face, she said with a soft chuckle, “If he wants to help, let him. It won’t kill you.”
Nathan turned and gave her a look of deep disapproval. “I know what you’re trying to do, but I don’t approve,” he stated firmly.
Violet’s smile didn’t fade. “What you approve of doesn’t matter nearly as much as what Scarlett
wants.”
Nathan said nothing more. Taking the bags from Violet, he headed for the kitchen.
Damian had just finished putting away the first load. Seeing Nathan enter with more, he moved to take them, but then spotted Violet behind him, also carrying packages. Without a second thought, Damian took the bags from Violet’s hands instead.
“Violet, you shouldn’t be carrying all this. Leave the heavy lifting to me.”
Violet beamed at him. “Scarlett would be so lucky to marry someone like you.”
Damian felt a flush of embarrassment and scratched the back of his head. “You’re too kind. I’m

Violet was about to say more, but Nathan stepped between them, his posture making his feelings clear.
Damian got the message. Realizing he might have overstepped, he finished putting the groceries away and made himself scarce for a moment.
Not only was Violet lovely, but she was also an excellent cook. Having been the one to invite Damian, she was determined to prepare a proper meal.
Nathan didn’t comment, simply helping her quietly in the kitchen.
Violet spent the next two hours cooking. She prepared a soothing soup for Scarlett, a savory stir–fry of mushrooms and pork, a large platter of garlic–infused ribs, a hearty serving of braised lamb, and several fresh vegetable sides.
When lunch was ready, Damian went upstairs specifically to carry Scarlett down to the dining
room.
Throughout the meal, he was attentively caring. He kept serving her from the various dishes and made sure her bowl of soup was always full.
Nathan observed it all but remained unconvinced. A significant disparity in family background could be problematic. Moreover, Damian’s reputation outside these walls was far from pristine.
As the meal was winding down, Damian excused himself to use the restroom.
Once inside, he sent a rapid series of ten “URGENT!” texts to his mother.
Ruth soon replied with a single question mark.
Damian typed frantically. “After lunch, should I offer to do the dishes or just let it be?”
Ruth seemed to consider for a moment before her advice came through. “Absolutely rush to
wash them.”
Heartened, Damian washed his hands and returned to the dining room. Everyone was nearly
finished.
As Violet began clearing the table, Damian stood up again. “Please, let me handle this. I’ll do the washing up.”
Seeing his eagerness, Violet couldn’t help but laugh warmly. “Mr. Langley, we have help for that. It’s really not necessary.”
In Violet’s eyes, a man willing to go to such lengths for a woman couldn’t be all bad.

Damian’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Then at least let me sweep or mop.”
Violet smiled gently and then turned to Scarlett. “Scarlett, talk some sense into him, will you?”
Scarlett had been observing the entire exchange. She couldn’t decipher Damian’s motives.
The woman he was interested in was Sabrina–so why was he going to such humble lengths here in her home?
Unable to make sense of it, and seizing the opportunity Violet handed her, she said to Damian, “Didn’t you mention an important meeting at your office this afternoon? Come on, I’ll walk you
out.”
