He had often envied Vincent. Why did he get to have Scarlett? Why was he the one she treated so well?
Looking at the warm scene unfolding before him, Damian finally turned his face away.
Just then, Nathan cursed under his breath. “Disgusting.”
Damian looked up, confirming Nathan was directing his anger toward Vincent.
Seeing that neither he nor Nathan was moving, Violet suggested, “I’ll go down and ask.”
Damian’s phone buzzed with a series of messages. He stopped Violet as she reached for the door handle. “Don’t bother. Scarlett isn’t here.”
Nathan pressed immediately, “Then where is she?”
Violet looked equally bewildered.
After a pause, Damian replied with a strained, hollow laugh. “She’s in the hospital.”
Violet, misunderstanding, said anxiously, “But I went to the hospital. She wasn’t on duty.”
“Not as a doctor,” Damian clarified, his voice tight. “As a patient.”
The realization hit Violet. Remembering Scarlett’s evasiveness on the phone, she whispered, “No wonder she was hiding it from us… We need to see her.”
Damian turned to stare out the window, his heart growing cold. “She’s in the obstetrics ward.”
Obstetrics.
What did that mean? A pregnancy? A termination?
Violet froze. “What?”
“You two go,” Damian said, his tone flat and final. “I… won’t be joining you.”
Nathan sneered as he pushed open the car door. “Figures. They’re two of a kind.”
He opened the rear door for Violet. “Let’s go.”
Before getting out, Violet glanced back at Damian. Seeing his stony expression, she followed her husband silently.

Once they were gone, Damian slammed his fist into the steering wheel with a force that split the skin across his knuckles.
He didn’t flinch. He just stared at the blood welling in his palm, his eyes unblinking.
As he watched, tears suddenly spilled over, falling onto the blood and scattering tiny crimson droplets.
In that moment, Damian felt utterly shattered.
He didn’t know what to think anymore.
His contact’s message was clear. Scarlett was indeed hospitalized–in the maternity wing.
The only two possibilities he could imagine were the two most painful ones.
So, all this time, she and Vincent had still been that intimate.
The thought was a physical ache. He raised his hand and struck himself twice across the face.
It turned out he had been the fool all along.

Violet and Nathan hurried to the hospital and found the obstetrics ward.
At the nurses‘ station, they got Scarlett’s room number.
As they rushed down the hall, Claire stepped out of the doctor’s office and nearly collided with
them.
Seeing them, Claire’s heart jumped. She quickly pulled out her phone and typed a message to Scarlett. “Nathan and Violet are here.”
Then she looked up, forcing calm into her voice. “Nathan, Violet… what brings you here?”
Nathan frowned, getting straight to the point. “Where’s Scarlett?”
Claire hesitated, then ventured carefully, “Nathan, here’s the thing–Scarlett just fell asleep. Let’s not go in and disturb her now, okay?”
Nathan sensed something was wrong. His brows knit tighter as he pressed on, “What exactly happened to her?”
Claire knew she couldn’t stall any longer. She had no choice but to use one truth to cover up another.

Claire chose her words carefully. “When Scarlett decided to finalize the divorce, she… had a procedure. The D&C wasn’t complete, and it led to hemorrhaging. She’s here recovering.”
For a moment, Nathan stood completely still, processing the information.
When it sank in, he moved to step around Claire. “I need to see her.”
But Claire blocked his path, her voice pleading. “Nathan, please. She hasn’t slept properly in two days. She just finally drifted off. If you wake her now, she’ll be up all night again.”
Nathan halted. He desperately wanted to see his sister, but the thought of disturbing her fragile rest gave him
pause.
Though parts of Claire’s story felt incomplete, he couldn’t take the risk—what if it was true? Disturbing Scarlett would only add to his guilt.
Seeing his resolve waver, Claire pressed gently, “The doctor said sleep is the best thing for her recovery right now.”
