The room was dark. With only the faint glow from outside, the furniture was little more than indistinct shapes in the shadows.
Damian had been here many times and knew the layout by heart.
Even in the darkness, he found his way unerringly to Scarlett’s bed.
But when his hand touched the edge of the mattress, he felt no residual warmth. After a brief search, he confirmed she wasn’t there.
He checked the bathroom–empty.

The room felt still and unused.
Realizing Scarlett probably hadn’t been home at all, Damian took off his coat and slid openly beneath her covers.
The bedding carried no trace of her scent–it seemed no one had slept here for some time.
Ever since Scarlett had begun distancing herself, Damian had told himself not to come back to Theron Manor.
But he couldn’t help it. The pull was too strong.
So he’d given up fighting it.
He’d decided it didn’t matter why she was pulling away. His feelings were real. His desire to be
with her was real.
Why should he hold back just because she was hesitant?
Maybe he’d been wrong to be so careful with her heart.
Whether she returned his feelings wasn’t the point.
The point was, he wasn’t going to wait politely anymore.
He wanted her, and he wasn’t going to stop until she was his.
Having settled that in his mind, he shifted in the bed, telling himself he was warming it for her.
When she finally came home and showered, she could slip right into a cozy, pre–heated spot and fall asleep.

But he waited… and waited. He’d nearly finished an episode of a streaming series on his phone, and still no sign of her.
Just as his patience was thinning, voices drifted from the hallway–Violet and Nathan.
“Nathan, you’re back.”
“Yeah. You’re up late.”
“I waited because I wanted to talk about Scarlett. Something seems off.”
“What do you mean?”
Violet lowered her voice. “I called her earlier and invited her for dinner. She said she was working overtime and couldn’t make it. But after you mentioned you’d be late because of work, I thought I’d pack up some food and drop them by the hospital for her. When I got there, she wasn’t on shift. I asked the attending–she’s not scheduled for nights until next week. And she hasn’t been at the hospital today at all.”
Nathan’s brow furrowed. “Maybe she went to Ravenshade Villa to stay with Vanessa?”
Violet shook her head. “Even if she did, why would she lie about it?”
Nathan’s frown deepened. “Let me call her.”
He tried, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Violet looked uneasy. “You don’t think something’s happened?”
“We should check Ravenshade Villa,” Nathan decided.
As they turned toward the stairs, the door to Scarlett’s bedroom opened.
Both Violet and Nathan turned at the sound.
Seeing Damian, Nathan paused. “What are you doing here?”
Damian ignored the question, striding forward. “Did you say Scarlett hasn’t been home?”
Nathan shot him a dismissive look but said nothing.
Violet nudged her husband, then answered softly, “She’s been staying at Ravenshade Villa lately.”
Damian’s expression darkened. A short, humorless laugh escaped him. “I see.”
Sensing his disappointment, Violet added, “But tonight was different. When I called, she said

she was working overtime, but she wasn’t at the hospital. And she isn’t on duty.”
Damian felt a stir of unease. “Then let’s go to Ravenshade Villa.”
Soon, their car pulled up near the entrance to the Ravenshade Villa community.

Before they even got out, Damian spotted them–the “family of three” on an evening stroll along the pathway.
Vincent and Sabrina each held one of Vanessa’s hands, and every few steps Vanessa would lift her feet, swinging briefly between them.
Her cheerful laughter carried clearly through the quiet evening.
Hearing it, Damian felt a sudden, sharp anger–and thought immediately of Eric.
Here was Vanessa, having caused real hurt, now laughing without a care, as if her cruel words had never been spoken.
But for Eric, those words would leave a lasting scar.
Damian’s gaze fixed on Vincent’s retreating back. Unconsciously, his hands tightened into fists.
