Silent Dreams Never Die — Author: John Miller 329
Damian couldn’t understand why Scarlett had changed so abruptly. Keeping his voice low, he pressed her again. “Just tell me what did I do wrong? If I messed up, I’ll fix it. Okay?”
Scarlett met his gaze directly. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Nothing at all.”
Hearing that, Damian’s grip on her arm eased slightly. He asked, almost disbelieving, “So you still have feelings for Vincent, is that it?”
Scarlett tried to pull her hand back a few times, but couldn’t break free.
Finally, she gave up and said quietly, “I don’t have feelings for anyone. I only care about myself now–that’s all I’m capable of.”
Her cold words felt like a blade to Damian’s chest. To him, it was clear she was still hung up on Vincent and was just making excuses.
He released her hand roughly. “If you don’t care about me, then don’t pretend to. Even if something happens to me, it’s none of your business.”
With that, he turned sharply and started walking away.
Seeing him leave so decisively, Scarlett instinctively called out, “Damian.”
He stopped. A flicker of hope rose in him.
Maybe she’d just spoken in anger and now wanted to make things right.
When he turned back, full of expectation, he heard her say in a calm, even tone, “Clara and Eric are just kids. Let’s not drag our issues into their day. When we go back, let’s not argue in front of them.”
Damian let out a bitter laugh. “Is that really all
you
wanted to say?”
Scarlett nodded. “Yes.”
Before she could react, Damian closed the distance between them. He cupped the back of her head and pulled her against him, then lowered his mouth to hers without waiting for permission.
The kiss was fierce, almost punishing–he swallowed her protests, leaving her breathless.
Scarlett felt like she was suffocating. She pushed against his chest, but couldn’t break free.
Only when her strength gave out and she slumped against him did Damian finally release her.

His hand still cradled her head. He rested his forehead against hers, breathing heavily. “Scarlett,” he said, his voice rough, “this is what you owe me. Just a little interest.”
Then he slowly let her
A moment later, Scarlett gathered all her strength and slapped him hard across the face.
His head turned to the side. He looked stunned, working his jaw as if testing the sting.
When Scarlett lowered her hand, her fingers were trembling.
Once she could feel them again, she raised her hand and scrubbed fiercely at her lips, rubbing them raw until the skin nearly broke.
Seeing her look of disgust felt like a thousand needles piercing Damian’s heart.
Tears welled in Scarlett’s eyes as she stared at him. “How could you…” she choked out. “How could you be so selfish? So… tainted. Why would you kiss me like that?”
Of all her words, the one that stuck in Damian’s mind was tainted.
He stared at her, then let out another humorless laugh. “I’m tainted? Scarlett, I’ve been with plenty of women, but I’ve never let things go too far. All this time, I’ve been trying to stay true to you–and you call me tainted?”
The angrier he got, the more his handsome features tightened with fury.
His eyes were bloodshot, glaring at her with an intensity that was almost frightening.
After spitting out the words, he kicked the pile of firewood violently and stormed off.
Scarlett stood frozen, trying to process what he’d said.
He stayed true to me?
But the tabloids were full of his escapades. And she’d seen him with that actress at the restaurant with her own eyes.
And now? He had the nerve to stand there and claim he’d been staying true to her?
And what about him and Sabrina?
She couldn’t make herself believe it was all nothing.
No–Damian’s words weren’t worth trusting.

Seeing his dark mood, she approached on her own. “Mr. Langley,” she said gently, “are upset about what Vanessa said earlier?”

Damian was simmering with anger. He glanced at Sabrina. “Not worth it.”
Vanessa was just a child–getting worked up over her wasn’t worth it, though his heart still ached for Eric.
Sabrina thought his coldness was still about Vanessa, and that he was taking it out on her too.
She pressed on softly, “Mr. Langley, let me apologize on Vanessa’s behalf. What she said to Eric was wrong. She shouldn’t have spoken to him like that.”
Damian turned fully to face her. “And can you apologize for her for the rest of her life?”
