Silent Dreams Never Die — Author: John Miller 328
Damian’s expression remained dark. He turned just enough to fix Sabrina with a glare–the coldness in his eyes was sharp, almost venomous.
Sabrina had never seen him look like that and felt a flicker of genuine fear.
Vanessa, shaken by Damian’s threat, buried her face in Sabrina’s shoulder, crying quietly.
Nearby, Eric’s tears stopped the moment Damian returned.
After confronting Vanessa, Damian bent and scooped Eric up.
He carried the boy to a quieter spot before setting him down.
Crouching to Eric’s eye level, Damian gently brushed the child’s hair. “I’m sorry, buddy,” he said, his voice soft now. “I shouldn’t have left you alone back there.”
Even though Damian often teased Eric, in truth, he cared for him like his own.
Seeing him hurt like this was unbearable.
Eric shook his head. His eyes were still red, but he managed a small, brave smile. “It’s okay, Damian. You don’t need to say sorry.”
Hearing that only made Damian’s heart ache more. He pulled Eric into a quick hug. “Come on,” he said, standing. “Let’s find another group. We don’t have to stay with… her.”
With that, he took Eric’s hand and went to find Bianca.
When the teacher saw Eric’s tear–streaked face, she asked what had happened.
After listening, her expression softened with sympathy. “Eric,” she said gently, “you’re a strong boy. We don’t let words like that keep us down, okay?”
Eric nodded. “Okay.”
Bianca understood why Damian had brought him over. “Is there another friend you’d like to join instead?” she asked Eric.
Without hesitation, Eric replied, “I want to be in Clara’s group.”
Clara could be tough, but he liked playing with her she never picked on his deepest hurts.
Bianca gave his shoulder a reassuring pat. “Alright, let’s make that happen.”

After a quick rearrangement, Damian swapped places with the mother originally paired with Scarlett.
Once in the new group, Damian suggested Clara and Eric stay under the trees to wash and prep the vegetables, while he and Scarlett went to gather firewood.
Scarlett didn’t ask why the groups had been changed.
Firewood wasn’t easy to find inside the park itself, so they had to walk a bit farther out.
West Hill Park wasn’t fully developed–some areas were still rough and uneven.
Damian walked briskly ahead, and Scarlett quickened her pace to keep up.
By the time she reached him, he’d already collected several dry branches.
He snapped one across his knee, then another–but without gloves, a sharp splinter soon dug into his finger.
Scarlett noticed the blood immediately. She reached for his hand without thinking. “Let me
see.”
Damian started to pull away, but the concern in her eyes made him still.
He watched her closely, his gaze intense, as if trying to see past her calm exterior.
Scarlett felt his stare but didn’t look up. She focused on cleaning the small wound.
Finally, Damian couldn’t hold back. Even keeping his voice low, she could hear the tension in it. “Why are you so distant with me now?”
Scarlett was dabbing the cut with a clean tissue. At his question, she flinched almost imperceptibly.
After a pause, she replied quietly, “We live in different worlds.”
She kept her head down, her lashes casting faint shadows. There was no smile in her tone- only a quiet, stubborn seriousness.
The words stung. Damian’s voice grew heavier. “Scarlett, I’ve been trying–really trying–to close that distance. I’ve taken so many steps toward you. Why won’t you take even one toward me? Why?”
Scarlett finally looked up, her fingers still pressed lightly against his.
When their eyes met, she saw the frustration burning in his.

For a second, her mind flashed back to that night–the image of Damian kissing Sabrina.

Her expression cooled. “You have your life,” she said, her tone turning brittle. “I have mine.”
Damian was tired of hearing that. It wasn’t like this at the hospital.
She’d let him hold her while she slept. He refused to believe she felt nothing.
Angry now, he caught her wrist and pulled her closer. “You’re lying to me,” he said, his voice low and tight.
Scarlett winced at his grip. “Damian,” she said, frowning, “let go.”
