Chapter 14

“The look on a homewrecker’s face when she’s itching to replace the wife really comes out fast, doesn’t it?” Natalie took a sip of her coffee and replied coolly.

“I asked you out today to tell you this, Natalie. You’re not worthy of Rowan, and he’s already my man,” Imogen said, deliberately trying to provoke her so the divorce would happen sooner.

“If you wanted him that badly, where were you eight years ago?” Natalie shot back.

Natalie knew Rowan had agreed to marry her for two reasons. One was that Matilda had forced him, and the other was that Imogen had abandoned him, so he married Natalie out of spite.

“This is between Rowan and me. It’s none of your business!” Imogen snapped angrily.

Back then, she hadn’t wanted to break up with Rowan either. It was her parents who opposed the relationship.

They claimed that although Rowan was part of the Payne family, he still had an uncle, Lucian, who was the same age as him.

Frank had always doted on Lucian, the late-born son, and everyone believed that Payne Group would eventually be handed

over to him.

No one expected that in just a few short years, the Payne family business would expand rapidly. The family even assigned Rowan to a subsidiary and appointed him as CEO.

If she and Rowan joined forces, the entire Payne Group could eventually fall into their hands.

“If this is between the two of you, then why did you ask me out today?” Natalie asked, pretending not to care.

“This is one million dollars. Take it, end things with Rowan on good terms, and divorce him as soon as possible,” Imogen said as she pushed a check across the table.

“One million dollars? Are you trying to brush me off like a beggar, or do you really think the position of Mrs. Payne is only worth this much?” Natalie scoffed.

She had given up her career for Rowan. She cooked, cleaned, and worked like a maid for seven full years.

Now look at what she had been reduced to. One million dollars could never buy all the sacrifices she had made. She would never accept it.

“Natalie, don’t push your luck. I’m already generous enough to offer you this money,” Imogen said coldly. “If it were Rowan and his mother, they wouldn’t give you a single penny.”

Imogen had come herself to negotiate with Natalie, assuming that after seven years as a housewife, she would be soft and compliant. She hadn’t expected her ambition to be so strong.

Natalie knew all too well how cold and heartless Rowan and Scarlet could be, which was why she wanted to fight for more. This was for herself and Sarah.

“I don’t want money. I only want Rowan’s love.” Natalie’s voice suddenly softened as she pushed the check back to Imogen. Her tone was tinged with hurt as she added, “He loves the kids and me. He won’t leave us.”

Rowan and Imogen were growing closer by the day, and Natalie knew she had to act quickly. Otherwise, she wouldn’t just lose custody of Sarah, she would lose everything.

After all, she had no power or influence and could never stand against them head-on.

Imogen sneered. “Natalie, should I call you naive or just an idiot? The only person Rowan has ever loved is me. If you keep being so stubborn, first it’ll be your precious son, and next it’ll be your precious daughter.”

Imogen continued, “I could drive a wedge between you and Roger. I can just as easily make your daughter call me Mommy

Chapter 14

Natalie’s hands, resting on her lap, clenched into tight fists, her nails digging into her palms until the sharp pain nearly numbed her. Imogen had repeatedly crossed her boundaries, yet Natalie knew that Sarah was both her weakness and her shield.

“If you’re that confident, then prove it to me,” Natalie said calmly, relaxing her grip.
