Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 12
When he got home, Sean immediately saw the specks of blood on the wide–open window.
She was nowhere to be found in the apartment.
Isabelle screamed when she saw the blood and fingernails on the floor; she never imagined Sean could be so brutal.
But she quickly realized, the more brutal Sean was to that woman, the more it proved he loved her, right?
She turned her head and saw Sean, his eyes narrowed, staring intently at the window.
Sean’s fists slowly clenched. Nina had actually run away.
But then, as if he’d thought of something, his tightly furrowed brow relaxed.
Isabelle frowned. “Is Nina gone? We should go look for her, she’s all alone.”
Hearing this, Sean smirked. “She’ll be back.”
She can’t leave me. Sean didn’t say the second part out loud, afraid Isabelle would be upset if she heard it.
Although Isabelle didn’t know why he was so sure, she didn’t ask any further.
Sean looked at Isabelle with a tender gaze. “Isabelle, will you marry me?”
Isabelle was stunned. “But aren’t you supposed to marry Nina?”
Sean took her hand. “The person I’ve always wanted to marry is you.”
Her heart instantly felt as sweet as honey, and Isabelle gave a shy smile.
“I do.” The next moment, she looked guilty. “But Nina will be heartbroken if she finds out.”
Looking at the kind Isabelle, Sean’s heart ached a little. He stroked the top of her head. “But she didn’t hesitate when she hurt you.” With that one sentence, he condemned Nina.
That night, Sean and Isabelle slept in each other’s arms, but Sean couldn’t fall asleep. Images of Nina’s face and smile, her vulnerable expressions, kept flashing through his mind. The thought of Nina being sad actually made his heart ache with sharp pangs.
He walked to the bedside, his gaze dark as he watched the endless stream of cars outside the window.
Nina used to love sitting by the window, hugging him while watching the scenery outside. She would hang on him, just like a koala.
Another time, Nina suggested going to the amusement park. He took her there, but as soon as they reached the en- trance, she got scared and didn’t want to go in.

She looked at Sean timidly, her eyes holding a vulnerability he couldn’t understand. “I’m already so old, is it embar- rassing to still want to go to an amusement park?”
Sean still remembered the ache in his heart back then. He had sworn at that moment that he would never let Nina be wronged again.
The woman on the bed turned over, making a slight noise.
Sean seemed to snap out of it instantly. He pinched the bridge of his nose, not understanding what was wrong with
him.
She’s just a substitute for Isabelle, isn’t she? He only cherished and protected her because of Isabelle.
Letting out a breath, Sean forced himself to stop thinking about Nina.
Nina had a nervous condition and was afraid to sleep alone at night, so Sean was certain she would come back to him.
When that time comes, he would just have to make her apologize to Isabelle, and this whole thing would be over.
Thinking this, Sean’s heart gradually settled.
He got back into bed, pulled Isabelle into his arms, and fell into a deep sleep.
