The Girl in the Shadows Novel Chapter 9

Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 9

Sean frowned and stroked Isabelle’s hair. “Isabelle, you’re still too kind.”

With that, he swept Isabelle up into his arms. “Silly Isabelle, you shouldn’t be running around. I’m taking you for a check–up.”

After they left, Nina sat on the bed and gave a bitter smile.

She pulled out her phone and checked the time.

Five days left.

She went back to her apartment, packed all her belongings into a suitcase, and realized that after all these years here, her actual possessions couldn’t even fill one suitcase.

Nina felt pathetic. She was sitting on the floor when the door flew open, making her jump.

Sean stood in front of her, looking frantic. “Isabelle needs surgery. You’re a match. I need you to go donate your heart to her now.”

Nina couldn’t believe her ears. Sean was asking for her life.

She shook her head, refusing. “I won’t go.”

Sean was instantly furious. His lips pressed into a thin line, showing his displeasure.

Just as he was about to say something else, the hospital called.

“Mr. Miller, Ms. White couldn’t be revived and has passed away. Our condolences.”

The phone clattered to the floor. Sean’s hand slowly dropped to his side, his face ashen..

The next moment, he looked at Nina with madness in his eyes. “This is all your fault! If you hadn’t switched Isabelle’s medicine, if you hadn’t refused to give her your heart, she wouldn’t have died!”

Nina was startled by his crazed look. She tried to run, but Sean grabbed her.

He took a pair of pliers and pulled out all ten of her fingernails.

The excruciating pain of her nails being torn from their beds was like a red–hot wire being shoved into her flesh, a sharp, serrated tearing that left Nina drenched in a cold sweat.

A sharp ringing filled her ears, and her vision went black. She could even smell the metallic scent of blood, and a nauseating acid rose in her stomach.

Nina’s face was pale. She looked at Sean. “I told you I didn’t do it.”

She didn’t know how much time had passed. Nina had fainted from the pain several times, and Sean was long gone.

Nina saw the window that hadn’t been closed, and a powerful urge to escape flared up inside her.

She had to escape.

She stumbled to the window and used her nail–less hands to pull herself up. Pain instantly shot through her entire body, and her back was soaked with cold sweat. Nina climbed onto the windowsill.

Today was the last day. She needed to get out of here.

The apartment was on the third floor. A fall from here wouldn’t kill her. Nina looked down at the ground, her vision blurring. All she could hear was her own ragged breathing and her heartbeat.

The next moment, she jumped without hesitation. The instant her body hit the lawn, Nina heard the sound of a bone dislocating.

A sharp pain, like a knife cut, shot through her thigh, her left arm went numb, and she could taste the faint metallic tang of blood in her throat.

But the moment she landed, she didn’t dare to stop.

Sean was a madman, and all she could do now was run.

The feeling of having survived a disaster washed over her as Nina ran frantically onto the road and saw a car stopped in front of her.

The car window slowly rolled down, and Jessica leaned out.

She frowned when she saw Nina’s bleeding hands.

“Get in.”
