The Girl in the Shadows Novel Chapter 8

Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 8

Sean put her in the back seat and started the car.

Nina was conscious, but her body was burning up, alternating between hot and cold, her teeth chattering softly.

She tried to open her eyes to see, but she just couldn’t.

A phone rang, and she heard Sean’s urgent voice.

“What? Isabelle has a fever? I’m coming back right now.”

Something inside her felt hollow. Nina shed a single, scalding tear that landed on her arm, burning hot.

The car returned to the apartment. Sean got out hurriedly, his movements rushed, without a moment’s hesitation.

Nina clutched her mother’s photo frame, waiting and waiting.

She waited until it was almost dawn, but Sean never came back down.

Her body was still burning hot. Nina was now trembling from the fever. With shaky hands, she pulled out her phone and called for an ambulance.

While waiting for the ambulance, every minute felt like an eternity. Her limbs felt like lead, unable to move, and her skin was on fire, as if being eaten by countless tiny bugs.

Thankfully, the ambulance arrived quickly. Nina felt a wave of relief, as if she’d found her lifeline, and closed her

eyes.

When she opened her eyes again, the smell of disinfectant instantly filled her nostrils.

Nina struggled to sit up, but before she could react, a sharp, stinging pain spread across her face.

She looked at the person in disbelief. Sean was staring at her, his face dark, his eyes filled with disgust.

His disgusted look stung Nina instantly. She gripped the bedsheet tightly, “What do you mean?”

Sean looked at her like she was trash, his tone mocking, “You’ve got some nerve, opening Isabelle’s window to make her sick.”

Nina froze for a moment, then retorted, “I didn’t.”

After she said that, Sean’s expression grew even darker.

“You also switched Isabelle’s medicine. She had an attack last night and almost died!”

Nina didn’t know why Sean would think it was her. Her throat was dry, but she still said, “I didn’t.”

Seeing her refuse to admit it, Sean’s anger intensified. He sneered, “Fine, you won’t admit it, huh?”

He saw the photo frame on the table, a smirk playing on his lips as he picked it up.

When Nina saw his movement, alarm bells went off in her head. “What are you doing?!”

“I’m going to show you what happens when you bully Isabelle.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Sean let go of the photo frame.

Smash!

The glass of the frame shattered into pieces.

Nina’s heart clenched painfully. “Don’t!”

She reached to pick it up, but Sean was faster. He hooked the photo out of the frame with his large hand.

Then Sean looked at Nina, smirked, and tore the photo in half, then into quarters, until it was completely unrecogniz

able.

In that moment, Nina heard the sound of her own heart breaking.

“No!”

Her cry was one of extreme sorrow, filled with grief.

She watched helplessly as Sean tossed the pieces out the window. A gust of wind blew them away, leaving no trace.

Nina stared blankly, her shoulders slumped. It was as if her soul had been ripped from her body, and she collapsed onto the bed.

Her fingers curled unconsciously, digging her nails deep into her palms, as if trying to mask the pain in her heart with physical pain.

When she turned around, she saw Isabelle standing in the doorway, a triumphant, taunting smile on her face.

A chill ran through her, and Nina’s fingertips were ice–cold.

At this point, what wasn’t there to understand?

So her innocence and kindness were just an act, but Nina didn’t understand what she had done to offend her, to make her want revenge like this.

It turned out she had orchestrated the whole thing herself.

Nina watched coldly as Sean held Isabelle tenderly, while Isabelle, with red–rimmed eyes, said that Nina must have suffered.

“It must be a mistake. Nina would never hurt me, Sean.”
