Danielle froze, like she’d been hit by a bolt of lightning. Jeremy actually wanted Adriana to marry Justin! Why?

If Justin married the Barton heir, that meant he would be almost impossible to sway.

No way. She couldn’t let that happen.

Gritting her teeth, Danielle grabbed her phone and shot a message to Savannah. They had been at each other over Justin, but now he was about to marry Adriana. Savannah needed to focus on Adriana instead.

“This isn’t the time for us to fight each other. We need to team up against Adriana,” Danielle typed.

Savannah replied quickly, “Why? Adriana is just a trashy orphan! She doesn’t deserve it!”

Clearly, they had reached an unspoken agreement. Their target was now Adriana.

Jeremy finished giving Adriana and Justin his final instructions in the emergency room. Soon after, he could no longer hold on and slipped into sleep, finally passing without much pain.

Adriana stayed in the hallway for a long while, feeling completely numb.

Justin was busy handling the funeral arrangements with several elders and senior executives. Everyone hustled, occupied and tense, yet she felt as if the entire world had fallen silent.

Jeremy’s final words were clear. As a Barton, she had to stay strong. She couldn’t be soft–hearted.

Adriana had always been gentle, and Jeremy had worried she wouldn’t be able to command respect in the

company.

In truth, he hadn’t fully trusted Justin either.

Anyone could betray her. She had to become strong enough to secure her place at the top.

She had just returned to the Bartons, and Jeremy’s health was failing. The path he laid out could only go so far.

Human hearts were unpredictable. Even if Jeremy told all his trusted aides to support Adriana after his death, they could switch sides if the company’s interests changed.

Everyone chased profit and avoided risk. That was Jeremy’s biggest fear.

That was why he publicly tied Adriana and Justin together through marriage. It was a hidden leash on Justin and a shield against the media and public opinion.

If Justin ever betrayed her or the Bartons, everyone would see him as ungrateful and condemn him.

“Grandpa should know about Curtis…” Adriana said quietly as Justin handed her a cup of hot coffee,

puzzled.

If Jeremy knew Curtis was still alive, why insist on marrying her to Justin?

Justin squatted in front of her, deliberately acting close in front of the reporters.

“Because Grandpa didn’t trust me,” he said with a bitter smile.

He understood Jeremy had set everything up with those last moves.

“Once things settle, I’ll give you half the shares in my name. I…” Adriana was worried Justin would be upset that Jeremy hadn’t left him any inheritance.

“I never wanted that. Grandpa left me shares and assets in his earlier will. I turned them down,” Justin said, holding her hand on the cup, his gaze intense. “Adriana, the road ahead is going to be tough. No one can stay by your side forever. Not even me. Got it?”

Adriana took a deep breath. She understood what he meant.

He might be leaving as well.

Jeremy wanted them married, but Justin wouldn’t take advantage of or claim Curtis‘ wife. That meant he had to leave the Barton Group.

Once he was gone, Adriana would have to carry the entire Barton Group herself. It’d be incredibly difficult.

But no matter how hard it was, she had to do it.

“Justin, no matter what happens, I don’t want us to become enemies,” she said hoarsely.

She couldn’t see through Justin or understand him.

News of Jeremy’s death hit Harborton’s media and caused a stir in elite circles.

The Bartons had a huge influence locally and in the broader business world. Jeremy had worked his way up as a live–in son–in–law, known for his ruthless methods.

That year, the four great families in Harborton had struggled through economic crises and internal power struggles. The Lincolns nearly went bankrupt. But even after losing his son, daughter–in–law, and granddaughter, Jeremy kept the Barton Group stable. That alone showed how capable and formidable he

was.

He didn’t just steady the Bartons–he also saved the Lincolns from collapsing.

Barton Estate.

“We must handle Mr. Barton’s funeral properly. It’ll last seven days according to his hometown customs. You’ll be receiving guests. As the younger generation, you two need to be ready. It’ll be exhausting,” Philip explained to Adriana and Justin in the living room about the funeral arrangements.
