“I can take care of myself,” Adriana told Curtis not to get distracted. She wasn’t someone who could be easily schemed against.
Harborton Hospital.
After emergency treatment, Jeremy was transferred to the ICU.
Now, his life was being sustained solely by a ventilator.
Justin stood anxiously outside the ward, constantly checking the time.
He desperately hoped Adriana would get here before Jeremy passed away.
Reporters swarmed outside, all waiting for Jeremy’s final breath.
Chandler and Danielle lounged on a bench, acting totally unconcerned while watching Justin fidget.
“Justin, you haven’t actually found the real Nicole, have you?” Danielle probed casually. “Planning to use our trick to fake her so the Barton assets stay in the family? Don’t forget- we’re not that easy to fool.”
She stood and walked over, a faint smile on her lips. “Without a paternity test, we won’t accept her.”
Justin looked at Danielle coolly. “Everything in the Bartons is decided by Mr. Barton alone, not you or me.”
“Justin, you’ve been Grandpa’s lapdog forever. Are you really content with that?” Danielle looked down on him arrogantly. “Grandpa is nearly gone. Why not team up? You can get what you want. I won’t be greedy. How about a win–win?”
She kept trying to tempt him.
“My dad is still Grandpa’s only son and heir,” Danielle pressed. “We still have influence within the group. If we cooperate…”
Justin curved his lips slightly. “Cooperate with you?”

He said calmly, “Cooperate with wolves? I’d be scared that I wouldn’t even make it out alive.”
Her expression darkened. “Justin, don’t get greedy. You could end up with nothing.”
She was sure Justin and Jeremy had already found a stand–in for Nicole. She and Chandler were ready to expose the lie anytime.
“How’s Mr. Barton doing?”
“Mr. Hotchner, has the will been made public?”
“Ms. Barton, Mr. Chandler, will you inherit Barton Group? Has Ms. Nicole been found?”
Suddenly, the elevator doors opened, and reporters rushed in.
Justin’s face tightened. “Who let them in?”
Danielle smiled faintly. “The media have the right to cover public news. Grandpa is about gone, so announcing the heir matters most.”
She and Chandler were betting that Jeremy would be too weak to speak.
They’d bribed a doctor to update them on his condition.
Jeremy had already been struggling to speak. Now he was barely hanging on–just buying time.
“Mr. Hotchner, how’s Mr. Barton?” From the other elevator, Barton Group’s key executives rushed in, tired and anxious.
They needed to know who would run the company next.
For them, they preferred Justin. He was capable and proven.
“Mr. Barton isn’t well. He’s still under observation. It’s too early to talk about this,” Justin said, clearly displeased.
“But didn’t you notify us-” one of the vice presidents said in surprise, glancing at the other
executives.
“We got a group chat message,” another department head quickly added, pulling out his phone. “It said you asked us to come to the hospital to see Mr. Barton off…”

Danielle stepped forward, smirking. “I sent that message. Since you’re all here, we might as well use this chance to go public about Barton Group’s succession.”
“What right do you have to talk about succession?!” Wyatt Zimmer, a vice president, snapped as he pointed at her. “Mr. Barton already made it clear in public that Chandler and Danielle have zero inheritance rights. All the Bartons‘ assets won’t be yours!”
Danielle’s expression darkened. Before she could retort, Chandler stepped in.
He smiled calmly. “No real grudge exists between father and son. We’ve fought for years. I’m my dad’s only blood and his only son. If there’s no will, inheritance law says I get everything.”
“Who said there’s no will?” Justin shot Chandler a cold look.
“The will was made public long ago. Nothing belongs to anyone else. Ms. Nicole is the only legal heir!” Wyatt pointed at Chandler. “You’re not qualified!”
“My niece has to be alive first,” Chandler replied confidently. “She’s been missing for years. If she’s never found, the will doesn’t count. And if the will is invalid, that makes me the strongest claimant for everything.”
