Chapter 215 Useless Father and Useful Sons

Chapter 215 Useless Father and Useful Sons

Denton stared at Michael in disbelief. His dad had never stepped into the kitchen, but today he was actually trying to cook?

Did something happen to mom?

Denton had thought his mom might try to force him to marry Nicole. But so far, she hadn’t made a move; she only gently hinted at it together with his dad.

“Mom, are you really feeling okay?” Denton asked, worried.

Juliet knew her son was taking the bait. She waved her hand weakly and said, “I’m fine. Just catching a little cold.”

She lay on the bed, coughing softly, looking pitiful.

Denton said nothing. He walked to the desk and started studying.

Not long after, Michael burned the food.

Denton walked out calmly, took the pot from him, added water, scrubbed it clean, and started cooking again. His movements were smooth and practiced, like he had done it a hundred times.

Michael felt a little guilty. As the father, he was supposed to take care of his son, not the other way around.

But he didn’t really feel shame; he believed that a son should be useful.

Besides, as long as Denton agreed to marry Nicole, everything from the two families would be his.

By then, as his dad, Michael would live an effortless life again.

“Denton, how’s school going? Can you adapt to the international class?” Michael asked.

“Yeah, it’s pretty good,” Denton said. Then he turned to look at him. “But Dad, I agreed to join the international class because I want to study overseas. It will help me build a stronger résumé. I didn’t do it to fight my brother for the family fortune.”

He looked at him calmly, as if telling Michael to stop dreaming.

Michael finally lost his patience. He spoke like he was doing Denton a favor. “Tell me, did all that studying make you stupid? Lincoln Group and the Barton Group are two massive empires. You could marry a girl and inherit everything. How is that not a good deal?”

Denton questioned his old man furiously. “If this is such a great deal, then why did you run from it back then? You had an arranged marriage too. You married Curtis’s mom, didn’t you?”

Michael froze. His face darkened as if he didn’t want to remember that woman. “That’s different. I still did it, didn’t I? But who knew I’d marry a psycho? She nearly drives me crazy!”

He spoke angrily, almost spitting the words. “She’s nuts!”

“Was she really mentally unstable,” Denton asked quietly, “or did you drive her to that point?” He didn’t know the full truth, but he was certain if he wasn’t mentally strong enough, he would’ve gone crazy from living with someone like Michael.

Michael’s face twisted, struck right in his pride. Furious, he grabbed a frying spatula and swung it at

Denton.

Denton frowned and dodged the attack, without saying a word.

From inside the room, Juliet kept coughing and cursing Michael for being useless. “How do you start a fight again in the middle of dinner?!”

Denton finished cooking for his parents and went back to studying. Juliet kept coughing. Michael kept playing video games. There was no way he could focus.

This tiny rental room could barely hold these two, much less peace. “Dad, Mom,” Denton finally asked, “didn’t Grandpa gave you an apartment in Haldoria? You two don’t have to squeeze into this small, run- down place with me.”

Michael sounded displeased. “Your mom and I are here to take care of you.”

Denton let out a long sigh.

Who’s taking care of whom here?

“Tomorrow is my day off. I’m taking Mom to the hospital. She keeps coughing; something’s not right,” Denton said calmly.

Michael and Juliet exchanged a quick look. Their eyes lit up.

“Yes, yes, good idea. Take your mom and get her checked properly,” Michael replied right away.

It was exactly what they’d planned; pretend Juliet had cancer so Denton would have no choice but to do whatever they wanted.

“Dad, can you go play games outside? I’m trying to study,” Denton said helplessly.

Michael was reluctant to do that. “Come on, you’re already in college. Why work so hard? Just marry Nicole. Both groups will all be yours. Why bother struggling so much?”

Denton found this laughable. So if he inherited both families‘ businesses, he wouldn’t need his abilities? Just sit back and burn all the wealth away like his old man?

Sometimes, he felt he and Curtis didn’t even seem like Michael’s sons. His brother worked so hard and was so capable; there was nothing about Curtis that resembled Michael.

Thankfully, he didn’t resemble him either.

Curtis’s place.

Adriana had fallen asleep. Curtis got up quietly and walked out to the balcony.

His assistant called, “Boss, Mr. Denton agreed to join the international class. But he hasn’t tried to get close to Nicole yet. It’s still unclear whether he has ambition.”

Curtis leaned against the railing. He flipped his lighter open and closed. His eyes were deep and unreadable.

Kenneth hesitated for a moment before speaking softly, “Boss, should we deal with Mr. Denton now? Remove the threat?”

With Curtis’s abilities, making sure Denton never had a chance to become his opponent or even disappear from Haldoria would be effortless.

But Curtis didn’t seem interested in doing that.
