The next day at noon, I got a call.
“Hello, is this Miss Renee Calloway?”
“Yes.”
“This is Marcus Stern from Apex Law. Mr. Hartley has retained me to contact you. Would you be available to meet this afternoon?”
I hesitated, “What’s this about?”
“Regarding the illegal transfer of assets under your name. Mr. Hartley has asked me to handle the matter in full.”
I gripped my phone tighter.
At three that afternoon, I met Marcus Stern at a café near campus.
He was in his forties, wearing wire–rimmed glasses, expression all business.
He wasn’t alone–two younger associates stood behind him, both carrying laptops.
“Miss Calloway. Please, have a seat.”
I sat down. My palms were sweating.
Marcus opened a folder and slid it across the table.
“Before your mother, Yvonne Calloway, passed away, she left you a property and eight hundred thousand dollars.”
“The property is located in Riverside Gardens on the east side, purchased in 2018 with funds gifted by your grandfather.”
“The savings came from your mother’s personal funds and a life insurance payout.”
I nodded.
“This property was transferred into Bryson Cash’s name last March. You were legally an adult at the time, but the signature on the transfer documents was not yours.”
“What?”
“We pulled the transfer records. The handwriting doesn’t match your signature. Preliminary assessment: forgery.”
I stared at him.
That day at the notary’s office–I never signed anything…
“Additionally, the eight hundred thousand was transferred last June into an account belonging to Stellar Wealth Management.”
“The company’s CEO is Bryson Cash. Registered capital: one hundred thousand. No actual business operations. Suspected illegal fundraising.”
Marcus closed the folder and looked at me.
“Miss Calloway, your assets were illegally transferred.”
