I Cancel the Engagement and Level Way Up 89

Chapter 89

Vivian kept smiling, but her words came through clenched teeth. “I’m worried you’ll lick your lips and poison yourself.”

Kingston knew exactly what was going on between her and Logan, but he still congratulated her.

Vivian took a deep breath. If she hadn’t discovered Logan and Sloane’s affair before the wedding, every “congratulations” she heard tomorrow from people who knew the truth would’ve been a silent insult.

If she’d found out only after she was married, every “congratulations” would have turned into knives that stabbed straight into her heart.

At least she’d found out in time. She hadn’t given them the chance to stab her.

Kingston let out a low laugh. Streetlights swept past the windows in clusters, briefly lighting his face as the car moved. A faint smile tugged at his lips. He seemed to be in a good mood.

“You already kissed me just now,” he said. “You look totally fine to me.”

Vivian had almost forgotten what had happened earlier. When he mentioned it, her face flushed.

She had nothing to say.

In the rearview mirror, the driver wore an amused smile. He could barely hide it.

Vivian could only bite her tongue in frustration.

Kingston clearly wasn’t going to let her off. He pressed on. “What’s wrong? Too poisoned to talk now?”

Vivian was speechless.

Just as things were about to get completely awkward, her phone rang again and saved her.

She glanced at the caller ID and quickly answered. “Camille.”

Camille’s voice came through the line, cool and flat. “You’re coming back tomorrow?”

“Yes,” Vivian replied.

She had always been a little afraid of Camille, who never showed emotion on her face.

Camille hummed in acknowledgment, her tone still unmistakably cold.

A few seconds passed, then she spoke again, softer than before. “Vivian…”

Vivian heard the hesitation and asked at once, “What is it, Camille?”

On the other end, there was the sound of papers being flipped. Camille stayed silent for a long time before she finally said, “It’s nothing. We’ll talk when you’re back.”

Then, she hung up.

Vivian stared at the screen after the call ended, confusion flickering in her eyes.

Kingston lowered his gaze to her. “Camille?”

Vivian felt like his voice had turned gentler. She pressed her lips together and nodded.

Seeing her mood visibly drop, Kingston asked; “What did she say?”

A sudden irritation rose in Vivian for no clear reason. “If you’re that curious, why don’t you call and ask her yourself?”

Kingston fell silent.

Vivian realized she’d snapped. She pressed her lips together and apologized quietly. “Sorry.”

She just felt that whatever he wanted to know, he could ask Camille himself. He didn’t need to get answers through her.

She didn’t want to be a convenient tool that pushed their relationship along.

She hadn’t wanted to do it ten years ago, and she refused to do it now.

Kingston looked at her in silence. With his expression blank, she couldn’t read even a trace of what he was thinking.

Vivian took a deep breath and looked out the window, the light fading from her eyes.

Her thoughts drifted back to that summer when she’d first learned she and Kingston had an engagement arranged.

The memory barely surfaced before she pushed it back down. She didn’t want to think about it.

The air in the car went stiff.

The rest of the drive passed with neither of them saying another word.
