I Cancel the Engagement and Level Way Up 84

Chapter 84

Victor had spent his early years walking a thin line between life and death. His sharp gaze swept over the men on the floor.

The air went so still that even a pin drop could be heard.

The people Victor had brought with him took over.

Vivian left the room with Kingston.

When Theo came out, he thoughtfully pulled the door shut behind Victor.

Once they were outside, Vivian finally let out a long breath she’d been holding.

Kingston stood beside her and looked down at her slightly pale face. There was a faint hint of amusement in his voice. “You planned this?”

Vivian pressed her lips together and nodded. “Yes. I made sure I had backups.”

Before she’d contacted Kingston, she’d already contacted Victor.

She’d met Leah before, but she’d never met Victor.

She’d heard he was unpredictable. She couldn’t be sure whether he would still hold onto it after three years.

For a man who loved his daughter more than anything, dragging it back into the light was like pouring salt into an open wound. And the person behind it all was Zane.

That was her first plan.

She’d told Stella that someone was blackmailing her and had lured her to meet at Maplewood Club. She’d asked Stella to call the police right away if she couldn’t reach her.

That was her backup plan.

Her final backup was the man standing in front of her, and the one she was least sure would

work.

But he’d shown up immediately. He’d even been waiting in the hotel, making sure she didn’t

suffer a second of humiliation or harm.

She hadn’t wanted to put herself in danger.

But she’d also been afraid that the other side really did have something that could destroy Whitfield Group.

If Kingston’s shares became worthless, she’d be committing business fraud.

He would hold her responsible, and just as he had back then, take his revenge out on Hartwell

Group.

Hartwell Group couldn’t take another hit.

No matter what, she had to find out what was real.

Now that the danger had passed, she laid out her plans for Kingston.

Vivian looked at him with a calm, warm smile. She was trying to show him she could think on her feet, stay steady under pressure, and move fast.

She would make a strong partner.

She wanted him to see her differently, so that when she returned to Hartwell Group, she’d have the chance to sit across from him and talk about cooperation.

But the praise she expected never came. Instead, she watched his eyes grow darker until the light seemed to drain from them completely.

“I underestimated you.”

For some reason, Vivian felt like there was a barb in that sentence.

He hadn’t praised her. He’d taken a jab at her.

Even though it wasn’t what she’d expected, she steadied herself. She pressed her lips together

and thanked him.

“Mr. Howard, no matter what, thank you for coming so fast.”

Kingston held her gaze. “You thought I wouldn’t come?”

Vivian nodded, answering honestly. “Yes.”

All she’d told him was that someone had evidence of Whitfield Group’s crimes and had asked her to meet at Maplewood Club. If the evidence turned out to be real, she was willing to buy back the shares he held.

Maybe she’d taken too many hits from him lately. So, when she messaged him, she’d left

herself a small out.

If he sensed something was wrong, she’d given him the exact address.

If he didn’t want to save her, that would’ve made sense too.
