In “Healing Slowly But Surely,” Zevran is anxiously waiting for Chalice, feeling a mix of frustration and rage over her absence and her previous lies about Leilani. Zevran struggles with his emotions, torn between his anger towards Chalice and his concern for his brothers, especially Kael, who is in the hospital.

When Chalice finally arrives, she appears carefree and oblivious to the gravity of the situation, having spent time at the spa while Kael fights for his life. Her demeanor infuriates Zevran further, and he confronts her about her whereabouts, feeling a strong urge to end her engagement. As Chalice tries to feign innocence, Zevran’s frustration boils over, leading him to show her a video that reveals her involvement in a previous altercation with Leilani.

Chalice’s reaction to the video is one of horror, and she desperately tries to explain herself, but her pleas only seem to deepen Zevran’s anger. As she kneels before him, attempting to portray herself as the victim, her lies flow easily, revealing her desperation to maintain Zevran’s affection. However, Zevran remains skeptical, questioning why she didn’t confide in him about her earlier argument with Leilani. By R. Joseph

120 Not what you think.

Zevran.

My foot tapped rhythmically against the floor, each thud echoing the frantic beat of my heart. I was fixated on the door, willing it to swing open and reveal Chalice. It had been more than two hours since I’d summoned her, and the absence of her presence was infuriating.

I felt a storm of emotions brewing within me—frustration, confusion, and a simmering rage.

Turning to Kael, I couldn’t contain my irritation any longer. “Can you believe your ‘so innocent’ fiancée? She lied about Leilani yesterday, and now she won’t even show her face?” My voice dripped with disdain, the words spilling out like venom.

But as I glanced at Kael, I remembered the stress he was already under. A sigh escaped my lips, and I looked away, muttering a quiet, “Sorry,” under my breath.

My chest felt constricted. It was as if a vice was tightening around my heart, fueled by my frustration and the overwhelming need for someone to confide in. If I were left to my own devices, I could easily convince myself that this minor betrayal was enough to end Chalice’s engagement. But I wasn’t the only one tangled in this mess; my two brothers were equally involved, and then there was Caelum, who was hopelessly infatuated with her.

Just then, a feminine voice pierced through my thoughts. “Zevran…!” I looked up, my gaze locking onto the door. Chalice stood there, her expression a mix of confusion and surprise, her cheeks flushed.

Despite the chilly weather, she wore a simple pink dress that revealed more skin than I deemed appropriate. Bold red lipstick adorned her lips, and while her eyes seemed glazed and her expression sorrowful, I couldn’t ignore the radiant glow of her skin or the peculiar bounce in her step as she entered the room.

She cast a fleeting glance at Kael, not approaching him, before turning to me, her voice soft and almost melodic. “You sent for me? Is something wrong?”

Her innocent tone ignited a fire within me, my blood boiling at the audacity she displayed.

And the worst part?

When she fluttered her lashes at me, as if to say, “Oh, poor me!”

I narrowed my eyes into slits, glaring down at her. In a voice that was both icy and low, I demanded, “I called for you over two hours ago. Where have you been?”

“I went to the spa,” she replied nonchalantly, her airy tone only fueling my anger further.

There was something about her demeanor that I found utterly intolerable. It was revolting to think that while Kael lay in that hospital bed, fighting for his life, she was indulging in pampering herself at a spa.

I gritted my teeth, struggling to suppress the urge to unleash my frustration on her. Goddess, it took all my willpower not to lash out, to refrain from ending her engagement on the spot, even though such a decision wasn’t solely mine to make.

My thoughts were interrupted when I felt her warm fingers gliding over my arm. I glanced down to find her gazing at me with an unsettlingly soft smile—one that might have fooled me if I hadn’t known her better. “You seem tense,” she commented, her voice dripping with faux concern.

With a swift motion, I shrugged her hand off and crossed my arms defiantly over my chest. I could barely contain my disdain as I replied, “I am tense because I’m furious.”

“Why? Did something happen?”

That same innocent tone, that tiny, almost childlike voice.

I hissed in response, “Something did happen,” and without waiting for a reaction, I pulled out the phone Jim had left behind. I clicked on the grainy video that captured yesterday’s events at the parking lot, turning the screen toward her.

At first, confusion washed over her features, but as the seconds ticked by, I watched horror etch itself into her expression.

She gasped, the color draining from her face, and then she turned to me with a desperate plea, “Zevran, I can explain!”

Chalice.

“Zevran, I can explain!” The words slipped from my lips before I could even think to stop them, and as they left my mouth, I realized how guilty I sounded.

My heart raced, a frantic drumbeat in my chest, and I felt the walls closing in around me. The video continued to play, and it was painfully clear that I had been the one to attack Leilani first. I couldn’t let Zevran see me as anything but the innocent victim I was supposed to portray.

Tears streamed down my cheeks as he turned away, his expression cold and devoid of any warmth. “Zevran, wait! It isn’t what it looks like!” I pleaded, but he wouldn’t meet my gaze.

For as long as I could remember, I had known that Zevran held the least affection for me among the triplets, but I had never seen him look at me with such raw fury—and was that disgust I saw glimmering in his eyes?

“And what does it look like?” he finally asked after a heavy silence hung in the air between us. Desperate to convince him of my innocence, I fell to my knees, bowing my head in submission.

With trembling hands, I clutched at the hem of his pants, my voice breaking as I whispered, “We had an argument before then.”

I dared to lift my gaze to meet his, not surprised to find him raising an eyebrow in skepticism. I pressed on, “We argued earlier, before she came here… before I heard about Kael’s accident.”

“And what was the argument about?” His voice was as cold as ice, sending shivers down my spine.

I blinked rapidly, forcing more tears to spill from my eyes, and with a quivering voice, I replied, “She called me a whore and a thief. She said I stole you three from her and that I’d never be happy with you. So when I saw her acting distraught later, I was furious because I thought she was just putting on a show for you. I was tired of her walking all over me, so I snapped.”

Even I was taken aback by the ease with which the lies flowed from my lips.

Suddenly, I felt warm hands on my shoulders, and I looked up to find Zevran studying me closely. “Why didn’t you tell me or Caelum about this yesterday?” he asked, his tone softening slightly.

I lowered my head again, my voice shaky as I answered, “Because I was tired of you guys always fighting for me, and I feared you’d punish her more harshly than I could.”

His expression softened momentarily at my words, but then it hardened again as he looked away.

“I do not completely believe you, Chalice,” he said, his voice laced with skepticism. “Something about your story feels inconsistent.”

My heart sank at his words, cold sweat breaking out on my skin.

Wait, had he spoken to Leilani first?

DID HE?!

Conclusion

In the swirling chaos of emotions, Zevran and Chalice stood on the precipice of understanding, their hearts heavy with the weight of betrayal and confusion. Zevran’s anger, initially blinding, began to crack under the pressure of Chalice’s desperate pleas. As she knelt before him, baring her soul and revealing the raw vulnerability beneath her facade, he felt a flicker of doubt. Could it be that her actions stemmed from a place of pain rather than malice? The icy grip of his fury loosened just enough for him to glimpse the possibility of forgiveness, yet the lingering distrust remained, casting a shadow over their fragile connection.

Chalice, too, grappled with the consequences of her choices, recognizing that her web of lies had ensnared not only herself but also the hearts of those she cared for. As tears streamed down her cheeks, she understood that healing would not come easy; it would require honesty and the courage to confront the truth of her own actions. In that moment, amidst the turmoil, both Zevran and Chalice realized that moving forward would take time, patience, and a willingness to confront their own demons. Though the path to healing seemed daunting, the first step had been taken: a tentative acknowledgment of their shared pain, leaving room for the hope of reconciliation and the possibility of love blossoming anew.
