Chapter 4
Bam!
I had been holding my head, but hearing the voice, I turned around immediately.
The basketball, originally meant for my back, smashed directly into my jaw instead.
A brutal force, carrying the smell of stale rubber from the old basketball, slammed into me all at once.
I was sent flying instantly, my head slamming against the stone steps behind me. A fresh pudiated from the back of Purchase completed my skull.
I reached back to touch it and pulled my hand away covered in blood.
Seeing the sheer fury in Mom’s eyes, my lip quivered, and I burst into tears.
“Mom!”
Seeing me in such a mess, my hand drenched in blood, Mom broke down instantly and rushed toward me.
“Hey, what are you doing, lady? We told you this place is taken. You can’t come in.”
The boy guarding the door tried to block her, but he froze when

he met Mom’s ferocious glare.
“You fck… You, what do you think you’re doing?
I’m telling you, I’m a student. Watch out or I’ll sue you!”
Mom’s eyes were cold as ice. She snarled, “Don’t worry. Even if you don’t sue me, I’m suing all of you. You can kiss college goodbye!”
The boy stumbled back, terrified.
Meanwhile, Marcus just stood there, dazed, staring blankly at
Mom.
Mom didn’t go over to hit or scold Marcus; instead, she ran straight to me.
“I’m sorry, Sarah. I’m so sorry!
Mom is late. It’s all my fault!”
I wiped the tears from her face and forced a smile. “It’s okay, Mom. You’re here now, that’s all that matters.”
Mom pulled tissues from her bag, wiped my hand first, and then pressed them against the wound on my head.
Only then did she call 911 and my Homeroom Teacher, one after the other.
“Nobody leaves! I’m recording this. Don’t even think about running away!”

Watching her shield him from the storm, he believed Mom was the person he loved most in the whole world.
But later, Mom started making him learn this and that, forbidding him from doing whatever he wanted.
And he began to think Mom was so low-class-no jewelry, ugly clothes, not elegant at all.
Even though Dad told him their family was rich and he could do whatever he pleased.
Over time, he grew to hate Mom.
He liked the pretty lady by Dad’s side.
She spoiled him, never disciplined him, and let him do whatever he wanted.
At the time, he thought, If only she were my mom.
He never expected his dream would actually come true.
That pretty ladybecame his mother.
And when his real Mom left, all he could think was how ugly her sad, tear-streaked face looked.
But later, the pretty lady changed.
It was nothing like before, when Mom treated him so well.
He missed Mom, but she had disappeared.
Until one day, when he came to school, he saw Mom picking up

and dropping off a girl.
It hit him like a wake-up call: Mom didn’t want him anymore; she had a child of her own now.
Watching that girl throw herself into Mom’s arms and sweetly call out “Mom,” the rage in his heart grew wild like untamed weeds.
So he grew jealous, resentful, even crazy enough to bully her.
Yet he was terrified Mom would find out what he was doing.
He hid it as best he could, but unexpectedly, Mom still found out.
Only, Mom didn’t recognize him anymore.
