“You’re gonna say it’s fake, right? Photoshopped? Go ahead then. Pull out your phone and show everyone you don’t have all those deposit records!”

Mom’s face turned bright red.

Right then, Dad’s phone rang.

When he hung up, his voice shook as he stared at me in complete disbelief. “Ava, did you sell the condo you bought for your mom?

“The property management just called and said someone showed up to take possession of it.”

I didn’t look at him. Instead, I turned to the judge. “Am I free to go now?”

If it hadn’t been for my professional instincts making me save screenshots of all those bank transfers over the years, I’d probably be sitting in a jail cell right now.

Finally, after the judge cleared me of all charges, I walked out without looking back. The whole messy abuse case was finally over.

That weekend, I drove back home with the sales contract to finalize everything with the buyer.

The second he saw me, he started complaining. “Ms. Henderson, you didn’t warn me your family would be this difficult to deal with.”

I stayed calm and asked him to come with me to the condo.

When we got there, my entire family was camped out inside, literally sleeping on the floor like they were staging some kind of protest.

The moment Stella saw me, she went on the attack. “This is my… This is Mom’s condo! Ava, if you sell it, you’re the worst daughter ever!”

Mom clutched her chest like she was having a heart attack. “I’ve spent my whole life working toward this one bit of security, and now you’re ripping it away from me.”

Since the mortgage wasn’t fully paid off yet, I’d already given the buyer a discount on the price. He was worried I might back out, so he wanted to sign the contract immediately.

I completely ignored Mom and Stella and lifted my pen to sign.

Just as I was about to put pen to paper, Stella jumped up and waved the property deed in my face. “Selling someone else’s property is illegal! Think about how many years in prison you’ll get!”

I paused and looked at her.

The deed showed my sister’s full name, Stella Henderson.

I turned to Mom. “So this is what you promised me two days ago? That the property was in

your name?”

The buyer wasn’t happy either. “Ms. Henderson, so this place isn’t even yours? What gives

the right to sell it?”
