To celebrate my new position, the company gave me half a day off.
I slept till noon before heading to work.
But soon, a colleague said a “homeless guy” was asking for me at the entrance.
Puzzled, I went. Henry, concerned, came with me.
At the entrance, I saw a familiar back.
It was James.
He looked gaunt, cheeks hollowed, dark circles under his eyes, hair unkempt as if untouched for ages.
Seeing me, his dull eyes lit up, but seeing Henry, fury ignited.
He rushed over, trying to shove Henry.
“Get away from her! Who said you could get close to Luna!”
Unlike James’s mess, Henry kept regular hours and worked out. The shove didn’t budge him.
I frowned, not understanding what James hoped to achieve with this scene.
James turned to me. His eyes were bloodshot, breakdown.
He walked up, head bowed, pleading.
“Luna, come back with me. Let’s not get divorced, okay?”
I shook my head.
“James, we’re over. What you’re doing now is unfair to me, and to Emily.”
“No! We’re not over!” James grew desperate, reaching for my hand, but Henry blocked him.
Henry gave a light push.
James fell back.
The ring I’d abandoned on the coffee table tumbled out, rolling a few times.
James’s eyes reddened further.
He picked up the ring, begging me. “Luna, one more chance. Please?”
I still shook my head. “Even if you won’t sign, I can file for divorce.”
“Stalling is pointless. If not for me, then for Emily and Tommy, sign the papers.”
I turned to leave. James tried to follow but was stopped by security at the door.
Behind me, he desperately called my name, over and over.
But I wouldn’t turn back for him anymore.
Later, I heard Emily had drained all the funds from their joint startup and disappeared.
James couldn’t take the blow.
He drank at home all day, completely broken.
His friends called me a few more times, telling me how James had given up.
I just listened silently, feeling nothing inside.
A few months later, I received the divorce papers signed by James.
Holding the document, I thought, my shackles were finally off.
All that was past was merely prologue.
My future self would have a new life.
