In the middle of the night, urgent ringing woke me.
It was James’s mother, Mrs. Miller, sobbing.
Disturbed from sleep, I had no patience for her tears. “What is it?”
Unusually, her attitude toward me softened.
Before, she’d always been condescending, commanding, accusing, as if I’d seduced her son.
She’d even make things difficult for me for Emily’s sake.
But this time, she hemmed and hawed. “Luna… are you free now?”
I reminded her coldly, “I’m in London. It’s 3 a.m. here.”
“I… Oh… This is our family’s fault. But could you… help clear James’s name?”
“Just say… you’re already divorced.”
“Luna, I know this wrongs you. But I’m at my wit’s end. Have pity on an old woman. James’s father is gone. If something happens to James, I really can’t go on.”

An “insider” had exposed James’s married status.
Emily went from an enviable lifestyle blogger to a universally despised homewrecker.

Some even photoshopped memorial pictures.
Little Tommy was rumored to be James’s illegitimate child.
I noticed Emily’s contact profile picture had turned all black.
All her posts were gone.
I was irritated. Why, even after fleeing abroad, wouldn’t this mess leave me alone?
Finally losing patience, I suppressed my anger and snapped, “Don’t guilt-trip me. The one refusing the divorce is your son, not me! If you’re really afraid for James, make him sign the papers!”
“Luna, how can you talk like that? James is still your husband, you…”
“Not after the divorce!”
I slammed the phone shut and threw it on the bed.
Resentment flooded in. Why did I always have to be the one to retreat?

No one was dragging me back into that twisted triangle.
