Time Paused Between Silent Moments by Aven Slate 14
Chapter 14
James was silent for a long time. Finally, he hung up.
Breathing in London’s damp air felt like a new beginning.
News of me going abroad and filing for divorce spread quickly among mutual friends.
Friends who sided with me called James a jerk.
James’s crew, however, remained oddly quiet.
Only Mark stayed active on social media, posting pictures as if in defiance—of them drinking, even staying in the same vacation home.
Underneath was Emily’s comment: “Feels like we’re kids again.”
The timestamp was 3 a.m. last night.
In the past, afraid James’s stomach would act up, I’d call immediately to urge him home early.
Now, I just turned off my phone screen and kept working.
Occasionally, James still texted. I never replied. His tone shifted from certainty to pleading:
“Luna, we can have another baby if this one’s gone. Can you forgive me just once?”
“I only messed up this once. I really will change.”
“I can’t live without you.”
“Please…”
