The three of them squeezed into the back, Tommy in the middle, looking like a happy family of three.
Only James remained frowning, silent.
To break the tension, Emily spoke up. “Luna, I always heard from Mark and the others that you were the jealous type. But you don’t seem like that at all now.”
Driving, I just gave a noncommittal “Mhm.”
Emily seemed encouraged.
“James is such a good man, always looking out for us.”
“Tommy… he’s never had a dad. He might not say it, but he craves a father’s love.”
“I was wondering… could I borrow James from you? Just for next Sunday, to take Tommy and me to the amusement park?”
“With Tommy there, James and I definitely wouldn’t do anything inappropriate.”
The car stopped.
I turned and smiled calmly.
“Of course. You don’t need my permission for things like that. He’s an adult. He can decide for himself.”
