“Bad lady! Babysitter!”
The young voice was full of malice.
“Oh! Tommy! Don’t talk to Auntie like that!”
Emily instinctively looked at James.
Seeing him just covering his face silently, she added, “The kid picked up nasty talk somewhere. Luna, don’t mind him.”
“He just really likes James. Last time he had a fever, he kept asking for James.”
“James is going to be such a good dad!”
Instead of crumbling as she expected, I just nodded faintly. “You’re right.”
James’s face turned even darker.
He spoke slowly: “If that’s the case, you drive. Tommy and I will sit in the back.”
He was trying to provoke me, to make me jealous.
But looking at the three of them standing together, my heart didn’t stir at all.
James no longer had the power to easily sway my emotions.
Tommy, unaware, thought he’d helped his mom “win” James back. His smug expression was a perfect copy of Emily’s.
