Goodbye Novel Chapter 2

Time Paused Between Silent Moments by Aven Slate 2

Seeing I was still awake, a flicker of panic crossed his eyes, but he gently tucked me in.
“Didn’t make me any sobering tea today?”
I just said, “No.”

The heavy smell of alcohol couldn’t mask the perfume on him, making me nauseous.
He sighed, seemed to want to say something, but only left with, “You’re pregnant. Get some rest.”

The next day, I arrived at the office early.
No matter the personal setbacks, work couldn’t be neglected.

I used to be late often, busy taking care of James’s life. Coming in this early surprised my supervisor, Sarah.

After the morning meeting, Sarah called me over.
“Luna, the company has an opportunity at the London branch. I wanted to see if you’re interested.”

“I’ve always valued your work ethic, I’m just concerned you might…”
Before she could finish, I nodded. “Sarah, I would value this opportunity.”
“Oh?”

Sarah didn’t expect such a quick agreement and hesitated. “Last night, I saw you throw away flowers… trouble with James?”

I smiled and shook my head.
Trouble?
No. James never fought with me.
He’d just look at me with that indulgent expression, as if I were a petulant child.

My phone buzzed twice. A call from James.
His tone was still gentle, but with a hint of displeasure:
“Busy today? You left without making breakfast.”
“It was our anniversary yesterday. I got you a gift.”
Curious, I asked, “What gift?”
“That little box in my jacket pocket. It’s a ring.”

He rustled through his pockets, muttering, “Weird, where did it go…”
Suddenly, as if realizing something, he gave a dry explanation: “Must have left it in the car. I’ll buy you another one.”
I smiled bitterly.

In yesterday’s photo, Emily was wearing a new ring on her finger.
So even our anniversary gift had to be “tried on” by his childhood sweetheart first.
“Don’t bother. I forgot to get you a gift, too.”
“Luna? Are you mad? I really did buy it.”
“Mhm,” I replied softly.
“Nothing else? I’m hanging up. Work is busy.”

From that day on, James and I remained in a state of lukewarm distance.
Not long after, James’s mother, Mrs. Miller, unexpectedly invited me to dinner at her place.

She never thought much of me, only acknowledging Emily as her proper daughter-in-law.
After some thought, I didn’t want to disrespect the elderly woman.
