Chapter 12
“What’s this party for?” I asked with a smile as I settled into a seat.

Aelfric lounged back, smirking lazily. “Be patient. There’s one more guest.”
Right on cue, a server led a woman in.
It was Evelynn.

She was wearing a delicate white dress. When she saw the crowd, her eyes widened with confusion.
Our friends greeted her warmly, ushering her inside with broad smiles.
I stayed in the shadowed corner. The lighting was dim, and she never noticed me.
As they began to force toast after toast upon her, the realization hit me.
This wasn’t a welcome party. This was Aelfric and the others helping me settle the score.
After a while, Evelynn sensed something was off and tried to excuse herself.
Someone blocked the door. “Ms. Wilde, you came all this way, and we threw this whole party just for you. Leaving now would be a little rude, don’t you think?”
Evelynn forced a smile, but she looked like she was on the verge of tears. She claimed she wasn’t feeling well, that she really couldn’t drink

another drop.
However, no one showed her any mercy.
When she reached for her phone, someone plucked it from her hand.
That man smiled. “Looking for your big brother?
Another voice chimed in cheerfully, “Don’t worry, we already called him. He’s on his way.”
Evelynn’s eyes filled with tears. “Bain won’t let you get away with this.”
Laughter rippled through the room.
“So Bainbridge is that protective of his little adopted sister, huh?” they teased.
Evelynn shrank into herself under the mocking chorus.
Someone grabbed her arm and forced another drink down her throat.
She sobbed and fought, but there was no escape.
I watched from the shadows, not a flicker of sympathy in my heart.
She could only understand the sting of a blow once she’d felt it herself.
Only when the scales were balanced could we call it even.
Suddenly, the door flew open. Bainbridge stormed in and pushed through the crowd to reach Evelynn.
She hid behind him, tears streaming as she poured out her grievances.
Bainbridge bellowed, “Have you all lost your minds?”

Aelfric sat dead center on the sofa, a single spotlight cutting through the darkness to illuminate him.
He took a slow sip of whiskey, his voice as cold as the ice clinking in his glass.
“Bainbridge, you think you’re the only one with a sister? Is only your sister precious?”
He hurled the glass to the floor.
“You can take Evelynn and leave. But from this moment on, whatever friendship we had-it’s as broken as that glass.
“The next time we meet, we’re enemies.”
Shock and a trace of reluctance flickered across Bainbridge’s face.
But with Evelynn trembling behind him and the atmosphere too charged for argument, he had no choice but to go.
At the door, he paused and said quietly, “Whatever I owe Gigi, I’ll pay it back in full.”
“Get out!” Aelfric’s voice rose like a whip.
The night’s drama finally ended.
Evelynn had followed Bainbridge to New York in secret.
She had seen him uproot his entire life to follow me, and she was drowning in insecurity.
As they sat in the car, she cried and complained about the humiliation she’d suffered.

Bainbridge listened in silence. When she finished, he said quietly, “But didn’t you treat Angelique the same way back then?”
Evelynn froze.
She couldn’t believe he would speak to her like that.
“Bain,” she whispered, “you always told me I was the most important person to you.”
“That was before,” he said.
Evelynn looked at him, stunned.
He went on, his tone flat and distant. “From now on, you’re just my sister. Stay out of my affairs. And don’t cause any more trouble for the Wilde family.”
He fixed her with a cold stare. “Don’t make Mom and Dad regret ever adopting you.”
Evelynn went rigid.
In that moment, she understood-some things, some bonds, had irrevocably changed.
