Hot Shower, Cold Heart by Mark Twain 8
Chapter 8
Chapter 8
If I look at her one more second, I’m going to throw up.
I take what Naomi told me and head straight to my divorce attorney.
“This is extremely favorable for you.”
Attorney Whitaker flips through the mountain of evidence. “Zach Carter’s infidelity is ironclad. And given his military status, the optics are terrible for him.”
“In terms of asset division, you can absolutely demand he walks away with nothing.”
“We’re also investigating potential hidden assets he may have transferred.”
I nod. “Push it through. I don’t want to wait another day.”
While finalizing the divorce settlement details, I get a call from the academy’s disciplinary committee.
They want me to come in for a final interview.
I agree.
In the military interrogation room, I see Zach.
Ten days. He looks like he’s aged a decade.
His shoulders slump. Eyes sunken. Unshaven. Bloodshot. Defeated.
He stares at me. His lips move like he’s trying to speak.
Nothing comes out.
The disciplinary officer briefs me on the preliminary decision:
Zach Carter-for severe violations of conduct codes and causing public scandal-has been issued a formal party reprimand and will be discharged from service.
His entire military career? Over.
I listen calmly. Feel nothing.
When the meeting ends, I stand to leave.

Chapter 8
Zach’s voice cracks behind me. “Vivian.”
I stop.
“I’m sorry.”
His voice is raw. Wrecked. “Naomi told you, didn’t she? About my sister?”
“She did.”
My tone is flat.
“Zach, do you have any idea how disgusting you are?”
He sways on his feet.
I don’t stop. “When your sister died-did you feel relieved? Even for a second?”
“You were her stepbrother. Five years older. A grown man. Her family.”
“How did you ‘love’ her, Zach? Did you pressure her? Did you force her?”
“Do you really think she’d want you finding some replacement to live out your sick fantasies after she’s dead?”
Silence.
Then-a roar. Guttural. Agonized.
I take a breath.
“All these years together. Turns out I never knew you at all.”
“At least I’m not completely blind.”
“We’re done, Zach. For good.”
