The hospital director and disciplinary committee head are all present.
“Dr. Ashford.”
The director’s brow furrows deep. “The situation involving you, Coach Carter, and the intern Naomi Warren-it’s all over the internet.”
“This is damaging the reputations of both this hospital and the military. What the hell happened?”
I place a USB drive on the table. My voice is steady.
“Leadership, this contains evidence of my husband Zach Carter’s ongoing inappropriate relationship with intern
Naomi Warren.”
“It also documents her severe professional incompetence and the near-fatal medical error she committed during
surgery.”
The drive holds everything: audio recordings, videos, financial transactions, OR surveillance footage.
Emma worked around the clock to compile it all. That fifty grand? She’s earned double.
I continue: “What happened in that stairwell today-I never intended for it to go public.”
“One of Naomi’s classmates was livestreaming to defend her. The truth came out by accident.”
“As the victim here, I understand the negative impact this has on the institution.”
“But let me be clear on three points.”
“First: I have never abused my authority to mistreat Naomi beyond standard teaching protocols. Every correction I made was based on medical standards and her actual performance.”
“Second: My personal life falling apart does not-and should not-reflect on my professional competence.”
“Third: I have formally reported Zach Carter and Naomi Warren’s conduct to the appropriate authorities. I trust the system will handle it fairly.”
I deliver the entire statement without interruption.

The leaders’ faces darken with every passing second.
Especially when they see footage of Zach-a military academy training officer-crossing every professional line with a student. Claiming it was “normal instruction.”
The disciplinary committee head looks ready to explode.
“Dr. Ashford, we understand your situation. You’ve been wronged.”
The party secretary’s voice is grave. “The hospital will fully cooperate with the military investigation to uncover the truth. In the meantime, your work status will temporarily-”
“I’m requesting immediate suspension of Naomi Warren’s clinical rotation.”
I cut in, voice firm. “Her psychological state and professional competence make her unfit for frontline patient care. This is about protecting patients.”
The leadership exchange glances.
Finally, they nod.
The hospital needs to control the narrative.
And my professional track record-plus the mountain of evidence I just handed them-has kept me in the game.
