Ashton took the tickets, looked confused.

“What are these…”

I smiled slightly.

“Train tickets from New Year’s Eve. When I came to see you.”

All the color drained from his face.

“You came to see me?”

I didn’t answer directly.

“I saw everything.”

Understanding hit him all at once.

He turned and left, practically ran away.

Later, when he reimbursed me for the tickets, he’d added two extra zeros.

I accepted it.

It was mine by right-didn’t even cover what I’d given him when he was starting his business.

Everything went smoothly in New York.

In less than a week, I’d landed a job I was truly happy with.

No longer trapped in family dramas.

After work, I could grab dinner or hike with colleagues.

Six months in I closed a major deal. They made me team leader.

In my downtime, I’d think about my old life sometimes.

Looking back, it felt like another lifetime.

Occasionally, I’d hear news from home through friends and family.

The house was warm, the dinner delicious, my parents full of love.

Knock knock.

Mom tapped on my bedroom door.

“Sweetie, it’s almost midnight. Time to set off fireworks.”

I nodded, grabbed the rockets I’d bought, and ran outside.

The fireworks painted the dark sky like a masterpiece. Neighbors passing by shouted their New Year greetings.

I closed my eyes and made a wish.

Here’s to a thousand good years ahead.

This year’s gonna be a good one.
