Chapter 5
“What…?!”
Ashton covered his face and stared at me in disbelief.
I closed my eyes. The tears I’d been holding back finally fell.
As Mrs. Reed told the story, that nightmare from over a decade ago came flooding back.
That summer, ten-year-old Ashton made a new friend at tutoring.
He wasn’t popular as a kid, didn’t have many friends.
So when someone wanted to hang out with him he was thrilled.
He begged me to come meet his new friend.
The two boys wanted to go play basketball.
The other boy glanced at me, clearly annoyed.
“Don’t bring her.”
“My sister comes along sometimes, gets bored in half an hour, then wants to go home. Total buzzkill.”
“She can watch TV at my place. We’ll be back before dinner.”
I grabbed Ashton’s sleeve, begging him not to leave me.
No one was home.
I was scared to stay alone in a stranger’s house.
But Ashton didn’t want to disappoint his new friend.
In the end, he promised he’d be back in an hour.
Kids that age forget everything when they’re having fun.
So the boy forgot too. His mom had told him a repairman was coming that day-and to stay home.
That middle-aged deadbeat repairman saw me alone and got ideas.

After that it was too late.
Nobody came back.
The tearing pain. The man’s stench. My worst day.
Ashton listened to his mother finish. His eyes went wide.
He remembered it now.
He’d stayed out an extra hour, pressured by his friend.
When he finally returned, I was gone.
He thought I just got bored and went home early.
Ashton staggered backward, clutching his head, screaming.
“No. No. Why didn’t anyone tell me!”
The crowd at the door had gone silent.
Mrs. Reed sighed.
“Stella made us promise not to tell you. You were so sensitive back then. She was afraid you’d blame yourself.”
After they put the guy in prison, our families agreed on a story-
To the outside world, I’d just been in a car accident, recovering at home.
I covered my ears.
I couldn’t hear anymore.
My heart died completely in that moment.
Ashton suddenly snapped back and rushed toward me.
“Stella I’m so sorry I-”
He reached out to hug me.
A strong arm appeared from behind me and shoved him to the ground.
Then I fell into a warm embrace.

Mom and Dad.
They’d heard what happened and came immediately to get me.
Just like that day years ago. Less than ten minutes after I called they were at the door.
Mom held me close.
My dad stepped forward, eyes cold as he looked at the Reeds.
“I know everything now.”
“Since your son looks down on my daughter, we won’t be chasing after him either.”
“The wedding’s off.”
“Wait-”
Mrs. Reed tried to say something.
But my parents were already leading me through the crowd.
