Nothing Fell Apart by Mark Twain 4
Chapter 4
Vincent felt a sharp, hollow ache in his chest. He froze, eyes widening.
What miscarriage?
When had Rebecca even been pregnant? Why hadn’t she told him?
Questions slammed into him, one after another.
He pulled out his phone and dialed her number.
Rebecca usually picked up on the first ring, but this time, the call didn’t
even connect.
He started typing a text, his thumbs moving fast, but stopped cold when he saw a message she’d already sent.
“I wish you both happiness.”
You both?
Why would she phrase it like that?
Did she know about him and Gianna?
A heavy unease began to rise in his chest.
Just then, his phone buzzed. It was Gianna.
He answered immediately, hoping against hope it was Rebecca calling back, but disappointment washed over him the second he heard Gianna’s
voice.
“Vince?” Gianna sounded worried. “The nurse said Becca was hurt, too.
How is she?”

Vincent hesitated “She’s fine,” he lied his voice tight. “She just needs some rest.”
He didn’t want Channa to worry. But more than that, he didn’t want her to carry the shame of knowing Rebecca had found out about their betrayal.
He hung up and drove home to find Rebecca.
But when he pulled up, the house-usually warm and lit up-was completely dark
On the dining table sat a gift box. Inside, the divorce papers.
As he slowly untied the ribbon, Rebecca’s words echoed in his memory, “You’ll like it.”
He wondered what on earth she could have given him that she was so sure he’d enjoy.
He opened it. The divorce agreement lay right on top.
He stood there, stunned.
After a long time, he numbly called Rebecca’s office, needing to know if she was really just on a business trip.
“Rebecca isn’t on a trip,” her boss said. “She’s been permanently stationed abroad.” Vincent went cold.
“You didn’t know?” the boss continued. “That’s strange. She offended a colleague a while back just to help you out, and that person has held a grudge ever since. She loves you so much; it makes no sense for her to leave for good.”
Vincent stood rooted to the spot, his mind blank.
He remembered how he’d accused Rebecca of overreacting when Gianna got hurt.

He remembered Rebecca’s bloodshot eyes after she’d stayed up all night fixing his project proposal.
He remembered her vomiting after drinking just to help him secure a deal, only to look up, smile, and say, “It’s okay. I’d do anything for you.”
He used to dismiss her help, thinking she was just getting in the way.
Now, those sacrifices felt heavy, precious.
Yet, he had ignored her time and again for Gianna.
He had betrayed her.
And Rebecca, knowing the truth, hadn’t demanded answers.
Instead, she had chosen to leave to preserve their dignity.
Intense guilt spread through his chest.
Vincent crouched down, burying his hands in his hair.
For the first time, despite all his brilliance, he questioned what exactly he had been chasing.
He had always thought he loved Gianna.
But now that Rebecca was gone, why wasn’t he happy?
Why was he in so much pain?
For seven straight days, Vincent locked himself in his room.
He tried desperately to convince himself that he loved Gianna.
Rebecca was gone; he should be celebrating.
Yet the whole time, he didn’t answer a single call or text from Gianna.

When Gianna finally pushed the door open, Vincent was on the floor, frantically scribbling “I love Rebecca” on a sheet of paper.
She stopped in her tracks, taking in the mess on the floor and his red, swollen eyes.
Her gaze swept over the scattered papers.
Her voice trembled. “Did you ask Becca for a divorce?”
Vincent looked up with a bitter smile, his voice raspy. “She did.”
The thermos slipped from Gianna’s hand and crashed to the floor.
“She… she knows everything?”
Vincent remained silent, but that was answer enough.
“I’m sorry, Vince. It’s all my fault,” she said. “I couldn’t control myself, and I let things get this bad. You have to go find Becca.”
Vincent’s eyes were numb. “Find her for what?”
He stood up and reached for Gianna’s hand, trying to deceive himself. “It’s good that she bowed out. Now no one can disturb us.”
Gianna looked down at the sheets scattered across the floor. She saw that he had written “Rebecca” over and over again. She stepped back, dodging
his hand.
She wiped away a tear, her voice harsh with emotion. “Vince, wake up! Look at all these notes. Do you actually love me?”
Vincent stiffened, clinging to his denial. “Yes.”
Gianna saw the lie he was telling himself and let out a bitter laugh. “I’ll give you a week. If you’re truly sure you love me, we can talk. If not… you go find Becca and apologize properly.”

Vincent frowned, wanting to refuse.
But for some reason, he didn’t argue.
He had liked Gianna for so many years; he didn’t believe those feelings could just change.
After Gianna left, the house felt even emptier.
On the first day, Vincent sat on the sofa, staring blankly at the speaker.
The image flashing through his mind wasn’t Gianna’s smile, but Rebecca as a child, chasing after him and calling out, “Vince, wait for me!”
On the second day, he walked into the kitchen and noticed the spice jars were arranged exactly how Rebecca liked them.
Salt on the left, sugar on the right. He could almost hear her voice, “It’s easier to grab this way.”
On the third day, he went to the office Looking at the files, he could only remember how Rebecca had alienated her colleagues for his sake.
In the whole week, he didn’t send Gianna a single message. He didn’t even
think of her.
The only thing occupying his mind was whether Rebecca might get lost abroad. Was she eating well?
Was she sad when she thought of him at night?
He finally realized with clarity that his feelings for Gianna were just a childhood obsession.
But Rebecca-the girl who had always trailed behind him-had long become a habit in his life.
A habit so deep he had forgotten that habit is love.

On the night of the seventh day, Vincent packed his bags and booked the earliest flight to where Rebecca was stationed.
Before boarding, he texted Gianna.
“I’m sorry. I was wrong.”
“I shouldn’t have mistaken a childhood obsession for love and dragged you into it for so many years.”
“And I certainly shouldn’t have ignored and hurt Becca because of it.”
“I’m going to find her and make amends.”
