Kristen found Zachary completely wasted at the Hayes Estate. Empty bottles were already piled up in front of him, and he was still chugging more alcohol like his life depended on it.

“Zachary, stop drinking.” She grabbed the bottle out of his hand. “Autumn’s with another guy now and she doesn’t want you anymore, so what’s the point of drinking yourself to death? She’s not even going to look your way.”

At the mention of Autumn’s name, the drunk Zachary finally said something. “Autumn…”

Kristen sat down next to Zachary and took his hand in hers. “Zachary, look at me. I’m the one who truly loves you. I was wrong to leave you before. I messed up. Tyler’s out of the picture now, and so is Autumn. It’s just the two of us. Let’s get back together. We can forget all the bad stuff and go back to how things used to be, okay?”

“No! Autumn loved me too much to just leave!” Zachary yanked his hand away and shoved her aside hard. “Get out. I don’t want you, I want Autumn!”

He grabbed a bottle off the table and took a long drink. The alcohol burned going down, but at least it dulled the pain in his chest.

Ever since they got back from Southcrest, Elowen had given him an ultimatum. Stop bothering Autumn or she’d cut him off completely.

Her words had been brutal but impossible to argue with. “Zachary, Autumn stood by you when you had nothing, and you threw it away. Now she’s finally smart enough to leave, and suddenly you’re full of regrets? Don’t you see how pathetic that is? If you have any decency left, you’ll leave her alone and let her move on.”

Kristen watched Zachary looking completely dead inside, and anger flared through her.

What the hell did that bitch Autumn have that she didn’t?

But she forced herself to calm down and think. If he couldn’t let go of Autumn, fine. She’d just become Autumn for him.

The empty bottles kept piling up, and Zachary’s vision started swimming. Through the haze, he caught a familiar scent and looked up to see the figure he’d been dreaming about every night.

“Autumn, is that you? Did you come back?” He reached out, and she took his hand and pulled him to his feet, guiding him toward the bedroom. “It’s me. Come on, stop drinking, you’re going to hurt yourself. Let me help you lie down.”

The gentle voice was exactly what he’d been desperate to hear. Once the door closed, the woman’s hands immediately went to his shirt buttons.

Her cagerness should have tipped Zachary off that something was different, but he was too far gone to care. He was even more desperate than she was, terrified this was just another dream. He pulled her onto the bed and collapsed on top of her.

When he’d completely exhausted himself, he fell asleep with her in his arms.

Kristen traced her fingers across Zachary’s face as he murmured Autumn’s name in his sleep. She leaned down and kissed him hard, letting all her jealous rage pour into it.

“Zachary, you’re mine. No one’s taking you away from me. You’re going to spend the rest of your life with me, whether you like it or not.”

She sent a quick text to her parents, then curled back up against him.

Thirty minutes later, Logan and Vanessa stormed into the Hayes Estate with their people and burst into the bedroom, catching Zachary half-conscious and Kristen pretending to be asleep.

Vanessa grabbed Elowen’s arm and wouldn’t let go. “Elowen, don’t you think it’s time Zachary and Kristen got their marriage license? They already had the wedding and slept together. If he doesn’t make it official now, that’s just wrong.”

The two families had known each other for years, but Elowen felt like she was seeing their true colors for the first time. She had made a terrible mistake. She never should have agreed to let her son have that wedding with Kristen just to protect their business partnership.

When Logan saw Elowen’s face go pale, he assumed she was refusing to let them register the marriage and leaned in close to threaten her. “You don’t want today’s mess getting out and tanking both our companies’ stock prices, do you?”

“You people are shameless.” Elowen’s whole body trembled with rage, and she suddenly clutched her chest and stumbled backward.

The butler rushed to catch her. “Mrs. Hayes! Someone get an ambulance here right now!”
