Damon scratched his head sheepishly. “I saw someone taking you to the nurse’s office, so I went after the person who pushed you in. But I couldn’t catch them, and by the time I got to the nurse’s office, you were already gone.”
A flash of sadness crossed Autumn’s eyes. So that was what happened. She and Zachary had been wrong
from the very beginning.
“Then why didn’t I ever see you after that?” she pressed on.
With Damon’s looks, there was no way she wouldn’t remember if they’d met.
Damon’s mood dropped a little. “My parents died in an accident around that time, so I went to Southcrest to live with my grandmother. But when I finally got back on my feet and came back, Rebecca told me you’d fallen for Zachary. So I just left.”
Looking back now, he wondered if things would have turned out differently if he’d been braver back then.
Autumn felt guilty when she saw how devastated Damon looked. She wanted to lighten the mood but couldn’t figure out what to say.
Instead, Damon noticed how worried she was and changed the subject himself.
“Actually, I begged Rebecca to take me to the airport that day to pick you up. I’ve had feelings for you for ten years now. If you’ll let me, I’d really like a chance to date you.”
Autumn hesitated for a moment. “You don’t care that I’ve been married before?”
“Autumn, so what if you’ve been married before? Does that somehow make you a different person?” Damon’s eyes were full of concern. “My only regret is that I wasn’t brave enough back then. If I’d told you how I felt sooner, I wouldn’t have lost you.”
Looking into his sincere eyes, Autumn felt like she should give herself another shot at this. She nodded. “Okay.”
Damon didn’t react right away. He looked confused for a second, then his face lit up with barely contained joy. “You’re giving me a chance? That’s amazing! I promise I won’t let you down.”
And Damon kept his promise. He was the perfect guy to date, honestly. He looked after her in every way, thought of everything, and never put a foot wrong.

Gradually, Autumn got used to his gentle attention and having him around all the time.
Meanwhile, Zachary followed them around like a stalker, watching their relationship grow closer every day and powerless to stop it.
Autumn refused to see him, so Damon had bodyguards stationed everywhere to keep him
away.
When Autumn and Damon were together, she smiled in a way Zachary hadn’t seen in forever.
Every time he saw that smile, it felt like a knife twisting in his chest. That smile used to be for him, but he’d thrown it away by not appreciating what he had.
Now, he only had one thought. He had to win Autumn back, no matter what it cost.
After weeks of waiting, Zachary finally got his chance. Damon had surgery one day and couldn’t take Autumn to her dance class, so Zachary slipped inside and cornered her.
“Autumn, we need to talk.”
Autumn backed up two steps. “We have nothing to talk about.”
She tried to leave, but Zachary grabbed her arm tight. “Autumn…” His voice cracked. “Please don’t do this. I know I screwed up. I can’t stand watching you fall for someone else. I can’t handle seeing you so close with another guy…”
“You can’t handle it?” Autumn almost laughed. “Then leave. Get out of town. Nobody’s forcing you to stay here.”
Zachary refused to leave. He knew that the second he walked away, he’d lose Autumn forever.
But Autumn didn’t want to deal with him anymore, so she handed the whole thing over to Elowen to handle.
Elowen had no idea Zachary had been harassing Autumn behind her back. She apologized over and over and promised to make him leave the city immediately.
Within minutes, Zachary’s phone rang. It was Elowen.
“Zachary, if you still consider me your mother, you’ll come home right now.”
