Zachary reached out to grab Autumn’s hand, but Damon moved faster and pulled her behind him protectively.
“Mr. Hayes, please have some respect. Autumn already turned you down, so it’s time to stop pushing.”
Zachary’s expression darkened with irritation. “Who the hell are you? This is between me and Autumn. You’ve got no business getting involved.”
“Zachary, watch your mouth.” Autumn shot him a cold look. “Damon is my friend, and honestly, you’re the outsider now.”
The word “outsider” cut through Zachary like a knife, and his face went pale.
“Autumn, I know you’re still mad at me. Everything you just said, that was just anger talking, right?”
His hands shook as he pulled a jewelry box from his pocket, opened it, and held it out to her. “Autumn, this is the Eternal Heart. It represents true love, and I’m giving it to you. Please give me one more chance to make up for everything I put you through.”
When Autumn saw the desperate look in his eyes, she almost laughed at the absurdity of it all.
“Zachary, don’t forget that you already had a wedding with Kristen. Technically, you’re my sister’s husband now. Are you trying to turn me into the other woman?”
“No! That wedding doesn’t count. From the beginning, you were the only one I ever wanted to marry. If you’ll just come back with me, I’ll take care of everything else.”
“But Zachary, I don’t want to go back with you.” Autumn stared at him and spoke slowly and deliberately. “If you really feel guilty about what you did to me, then leave. Stop showing up here and bothering me.”
Zachary could see it clearly now in her eyes. The coldness, the rejection, all of it was real.
At that moment, he finally understood just how determined she was to be done with him. Regret flooded through him, and his
welled up with tears again.

But Autumn didn’t even spare him a glance. She grabbed Damon’s arm and walked away.
She brought Damon back to her place and pulled out the first aid kit to clean up his wounds.

Damon knew exactly how much Zachary still meant to Autumn, and when he saw how upset she looked, he wanted to say something but kept hesitating. After a long pause, he finally managed to ask, “Are you okay?”
Autumn sighed. “I’m fine. I just didn’t expect him to track me down this fast.”
In her mind, she’d stepped aside to make room for Kristen, so Zachary should have been happy about that. She figured they’d never see each other again, and that would be the end of it. But now, Zachary was having regrets?
Damon’s heart sank. “You’re not going soft on him again, are you?”
When he saw Autumn pause while pouring the saline solution, he quickly backtracked. “Sorry, that was out of line. You don’t have to answer that.”
“Going soft?” Autumn shook her head and smiled. “I’m completely over him. I’m not going back.”
Hearing that made Damon relax a little. The next second, Autumn’s voice came from right behind his ear. “So are you going to tell me where we met before?”
She was leaning close and gently working on the wounds on his back, and her warm breath on his skin made him blush for no reason. “Ten years ago, by Lovesick Lake. Do you remember?”
Damon would never forget the sight of Autumn dancing by the lake. From that moment on, she’d been stuck in his heart.
Autumn froze while applying the ointment and accidentally pressed right on Damon’s wound, making him wince immediately. “It’s fine if you don’t remember, but you don’t have to be so rough about it.”
Autumn apologized repeatedly and hesitantly shared her guess. “I remember falling into the water that day. Were you the one who saved me?”
Damon smiled and nodded. “Yeah, that was me. You finally remembered.”
Autumn’s mind reeled like she’d been struck by lightning, and her eyes went wide. “Then why wasn’t it you when I woke up?”
