Rebecca was worried that Autumn might fall apart after leaving Zachary. After all, she’d the last three years making him her entire world.
spent
Autumn let out a bitter laugh. “Honestly? I have no idea.” She’d actually gotten accepted to a dance company overseas, but she’d turned it down to take care of Zachary instead.
It had been three years since Autumn last danced, and her body wasn’t what it used to be after the miscarriage. She wanted to reclaim that dream of shining on stage again, but she couldn’t find the confidence.
Rebecca noticed Autumn’s hesitation and squeezed her hand. “Autumn, whatever you wanna do, I’m behind you a hundred percent. You’re still so young, and you’ve got plenty of chances to figure things out. Just take that first step, and I know you’ll find what you’re meant to do.”
Autumn paused for a moment, and the uncertainty on her face slowly shifted into determination. “You’re right, Rebecca: I’m still young, and anything’s possible.” A small smile tugged at her lips. “I wanna keep dancing.”
Rebecca visibly relaxed now that Autumn had made up her mind. “Damon knows some really talented dance instructors. I’ll have him introduce you.”
Maybe it was the change of scenery, but Autumn woke up early the next morning. She stared out the window at the unfamiliar view and felt like none of this was real.
Just yesterday at this time, she’d been at the Courthouse getting her divorce papers, and now she was already hundreds of miles away in a different city, starting a whole new life.
Around noon, Damon called her. “Autumn, you up? Rebecca asked me to show you around the area, and we can grab lunch together after.”
When Autumn came downstairs, Damon was already waiting by the door. He reached out to take her bag, but she stepped back. “It’s okay, I’ve got it.”
Autumn politely turned down his offer. She knew Rebecca hadn’t given up on trying to set them up, and since she had zero interest in that, she didn’t want to do anything that might send the wrong message.
“I really don’t wanna take up your whole day. If you’ve got stuff to do, you can go ahead and I’ll just explore on my own. And don’t worry, I won’t say anything to Rebecca.”

Damon picked up on her resistance right away, but he still took her bag from her. “Are you kidding? I had to fight Rebecca for the chance to show you around, and now you’re trying to ditch me?”
“Autumn didn’t know what to say to that, so she just looked down and followed behind him.”
Damon was really thoughtful as he walked her around the neighborhood, and when he noticed she was getting tired, he took her straight to a restaurant he’d already made reservations at.
“Thank you so much for today, I really…”
Autumn started to say, but then, Damon’s face suddenly changed, and he yelled out, “Watch out!”
A car came speeding straight toward Autumn, and in that split second, Damon grabbed her and yanked her toward the sidewalk.
When they fell, Damon held Autumn’s head tight and used his own body as a cushion to break her fall. The driver who hit them saw more people gathering around and took off before anyone could stop them.
Autumn wanted to check if Damon was okay, but he beat her to it. “Are you alright? Did you get hurt?”
He was clearly the one who was hurt worse, but he didn’t seem to care about himself at all. His whole focus was on making sure Autumn was okay.
Autumn shook her head. “I’m fine, but you’re the one who’s injured.”
She couldn’t understand why Damon would use his own body to protect her from danger.
Hearing that Autumn wasn’t hurt, Damon finally relaxed. He tried to help her up, but the movement pulled at the wound on his back, and he sucked in a sharp breath.
Autumn quickly scrambled to her feet and carefully helped Damon up. His back had slammed into the railing, and the sharp edge had sliced a long gash across it.
“That looks really bad. Let me take you to the hospital.”
Seeing how worried she looked, Damon tried to comfort her. “Don’t worry, I’m a doctor. I know how bad it is, and it’s just a surface wound. I’ll be fine once I get home and clean it up.”
Autumn couldn’t stop herself from asking, “Why did you save me?”

Damon looked down and met her eyes directly. “Because I can’t just stand there and watch someone I care about get hurt.”
The accident had shaken something loose in him. It made him realize that tragedy could strike at any moment, and he needed to treasure every second with the person he loved.
He’d been planning to take things slow, but now, he didn’t want to hide his feelings anymore.
Autumn’s heart skipped a beat. She’d never had anyone be this direct with her before, and it left her flustered. “You care about me? But this is only the second time we’ve met…”
The affection in Damon’s eyes was practically overflowing. “Autumn, do you really not remember me?”
Autumn studied his face carefully, trying to place him, but no matter how hard she searched her memory, she couldn’t recall ever meeting him before.
