Kristen watched his expression shift and panic started creeping up inside her. She forced out a few fake tears. “Zachary, I’m so sorry. I had no idea Autumn would give me something as important as divorce papers as a wedding gift. This is all my fault. If only I’d seen them
sooner…”
Zachary’s fingers traced over the divorce papers without him really thinking about it, and for the first time, he didn’t try to comfort Kristen as she cried.
Elowen knew her son better than anyone, and she could tell he was having regrets.
But there was no going back now. She shook her head with a sigh. “Zachary, you and Kristen already had your wedding, so just leave Autumn alone now. What’s done is done, and you need to settle down and focus on your future. You two should go get your marriage license soon.”
At the mention of making it official, Kristen couldn’t hide her smile. She reached for Zachary’s hand. “Don’t worry, Mom. Zachary and I are gonna have a great life together.”
Zachary’s whole body went rigid, and he gently pulled his hand away. “Kristen, I’m sorry. I just need some time alone.”
Before she could respond, he turned and walked out without looking back.
His car tore down the road with the engine roaring loud enough to wake the whole neighborhood.
Zachary blew through several red lights on his way home, desperate to get there as fast as he could. His hands shook as he pushed open the door, half hoping he’d find Autumn inside and discover that everything that happened was just some nightmare.
But reality hit him hard. The house was completely empty, and every trace of Autumn was
gone.
Their wedding photos, the gifts they’d given each other, all the couple’s items Autumn had picked out for the house, everything had vanished. Even her favorite cartoon bedsheets had been replaced with cold black silk ones.
Then he spotted the divorce license lying on the table, and his chest tightened so hard he could barely breathe.
The pain spread through him like wildfire. He checked the date on the license over and over. It was from this morning.

So that was why Elowen left so early. She went to finalize the divorce. And he’d had no clue.
Zachary fumbled for his phone and called Autumn’s number, but all he got was her voicemail after it rang and rang with no answer. He tried texting her next, his hands still shaking.
“Autumn, where are you? Can we please talk about this divorce in person?

His phone chimed, and for a split second he thought she’d replied right away. Hope flared in his chest as he looked down at the screen, but instead he saw an error message from WhatsApp.
“You can no longer send messages to this contact.”
She’d blocked him.
The light that had sparked in Zachary’s eyes died instantly, and a wave of bitterness crashed over him. It finally sank in that Autumn had walked away from everything and completely erased herself from his life. The last thing she’d left him was a divorce license.
He kept tracing her name on the paper with his fingertip, his eyes full of longing for her.
Right now, at this moment, he finally understood his own heart. The person he truly loved, the one he wanted to spend his life with, was Autumn.
His story with Kristen had ended three years ago when they each married other people. He never should’ve held onto those old feelings or told himself they could still be friends. He never should’ve kept finding excuses to get close to her.
After a long while, he pulled out his phone and called his assistant.
“Look into where Autumn is, but don’t let my mom find out.”
