Kristen didn’t answer. She just grabbed Autumn’s wrist and started dragging her toward the stairwell.
“Let go of me.” Autumn struggled hard, trying to break free.
Kristen’s laugh turned vicious. “Don’t worry. I’m about to let go.”
Before Autumn could process what was happening, Kristen shoved her down the stairs with all her strength.
Autumn tumbled down flight after flight, her body slamming against every step until she was covered in blood and bruises.
The next second, Kristen screamed at the top of her lungs, “Autumn, let go of me!” Then she threw herself down the stairs after her.
Zachary heard the screaming and came running. When he saw both Autumn and Kristen lying in pools of blood, his face went pale as a sheet. “Someone fell! We need help! Get help now!”
The doctors rushed both of them onto gurneys, their expressions grim. “Mr. Hayes, both patients need emergency blood transfusions, but they’re both AB negative and we’re critically low on supply. We can only save one of them.”
Zachary didn’t hesitate for a second and pointed at Kristen. “Save Kristen!”
Of course. With Kristen around, he’d never choose anyone else. Pain tore through Autumn’s body as she coughed up a mouthful of blood, and then everything went dark.
When she finally opened her eyes again, a nurse was checking her vitals and looked relieved. “Thank God the blood bank came through in time. If we’d been even a little later, you would’ve died from blood loss.”
She kept working while she talked. “It’s been two days now. How come nobody from your family has come to see you?”
Autumn shook her head. “I don’t have any family.”
Her parents had only ever had eyes for Kristen growing up, and now Zachary, the man she’d loved for so long, had abandoned her for Kristen too. She’d always been alone.
The nurse seemed to misunderstand and gave her a pitying look. “Oh, you poor thing. You know, the Ms. Reeves in the room next to yours has the same last name as you, and her

injuries aren’t even as bad as yours, but her parents and boyfriend haven’t left her side once.”
Autumn’s lips twitched into something that wasn’t quite a smile, but she didn’t say anything.
The nurse had barely left when the door suddenly swung open. Zachary stood in the doorway with a dark expression on his face, and when he looked at her, his eyes burned with anger. His voice came out cold as ice. “Why did you push Kristen down the stairs?”
Autumn stared at him in shock. She couldn’t understand why Kristen kept coming after her no matter how much she backed down and tried to stay out of the way.
A wave of exhaustion washed over her. “I don’t care if you believe me or not, but I didn’t push her. She fell on her own.”
Zachary’s anger flared even hotter. “Autumn, do you have any idea that Kristen lost her baby because of that fall? She almost bled to death, and you’re still trying to say she fell on her own? When did you become like this?”
The words stuck in Autumn’s throat. She knew that nothing she said right now would make any difference. Who would believe that a mother would use her own unborn child to frame someone else?
When Autumn didn’t respond, Zachary took her silence as an admission of guilt. He left without another word and didn’t look back at her once.
Autumn spent the next few days alone in her hospital room, quietly recovering.
Meanwhile, Zachary barely left Kristen’s side, and Autumn could hear his gentle voice drifting through the wall all the time. “Kristen, try the soup. Does it taste good? I made it myself today.
“Tell me where it hurts and I’ll massage it for you.
“Come on, be good and take your
medicine.”
He never came to see her once, not even on the day she was discharged from the hospital.
Before she left, Autumn found Kristen while Zachary was busy making soup. “You wanna marry Zachary?”
Kristen stared at her. “What? Are you seriously gonna give up your wedding to me?”
“Yeah.” Autumn didn’t deny it. “I’m giving Zachary to you. I’ll leave on the wedding day.”
Kristen saw she was dead serious and let out a cold laugh. “Smart move.”
