Zachary didn’t hesitate for even a second. He pulled Kristen into his arms and turned his back to shield her from the acid, taking the full hit himself.
Autumn froze in place and could only watch as blood soaked through his gray suit jacket. His face went deathly pale from the pain, but he still wouldn’t let go of Kristen. He kept murmuring to her, “Don’t be scared. I’ve got you.”
Autumn looked down to hide the emotion in her eyes and let out a bitter laugh. So he really would die for Kristen. He actually would.
Zachary didn’t wake up until the next evening. The moment his eyes opened, the first thing out of his mouth was concern for Kristen. “Is Kristen okay?”
Autumn had been at his bedside for over 24 hours straight, and she pressed him back down when he tried to throw off the covers and get up. Her voice came out hoarse. “She’s fine. You protected her completely, but you’re the one who got hurt bad. The doctor said the burns on your back are gonna leave deep scars.”
That seemed to put Zachary’s mind at ease. “As long as she’s okay, I don’t care if I’m scarred for life.”
Autumn’s lashes trembled. Just how much did he love Kristen?
Zachary finally looked at Autumn and noticed how exhausted she was. Guilt flickered across his face. “Autumn, thank you for staying with me. You should go home and get some rest now. I’ll have my assistant come sit with me.”
Autumn nodded and stood to leave, but a wave of dizziness hit her hard. She grabbed the edge of the hospital bed to keep from collapsing.
Zachary immediately reached out and caught her around the waist. Their eyes met, their faces close enough that their breaths mingled, and the air between them suddenly felt charged.
The sound of something hitting the floor broke the tension. They both turned to see Kristen standing in the doorway.
The bouquet she’d been holding lay scattered on the ground, petals everywhere.
Her eyes were red as she stared at them in disbelief, and her voice shook. “Am I… interrupting

Zachary shoved Autumn away from him. “You’ve got it wrong. It’s not what you think.”
Autumn didn’t see the shove coming. She hit the floor hard, her head smacking against the ground, and everything spun as she collapsed.
Kristen bit down on her lip until it bled and ran out of the room crying. “Kristen, let me explain!”
Zachary didn’t even glance at Autumn lying on the floor. He pushed through the pain of his torn wounds and chased after Kristen without a second thought.
Autumn lay there on the cold hospital floor and suddenly laughed. Right then, at that moment, she finally understood just how obvious the difference was between being loved and not being loved.
She’d actually been naive enough to think she could warm up a heart that was already full of someone else. God, how stupid could she be?
A long time passed before Kristen walked back into the room in her heels, wearing a victor’s smile. “So Autumn, you finally see how much Zachary loves me, right? You gave him three whole years of your life and he still can’t forget me. If I were you, I would’ve left a long time ago. How do you even have the nerve to hang around him anymore?”
Autumn used the wall to pull herself upright, and her voice came out steady. “Did you look at the gift I gave you?”
“Gift?” Kristen paused, then it clicked. “You mean that raggedy envelope?”
Autumn nodded. “You should take a look when you get a chance. There’s something in there you’ll want to see.”
“Stop being so cryptic.” Kristen let out a cold laugh. “Since you won’t leave on your own, let me show you who matters more to Zachary. You wanna bet? If both of us were in danger at the same time, he’d only save me.”
Something tightened in Autumn’s chest. “What are you planning to do?”
