Chapter 5 Revoked Privileges.
I looked at the man for whom I had spent every last ounce of my love.

Now he stood shielding another woman, hurling words designed to degrade, grinding every sacrifice and every shred of my dignity under his heel.
A soft sound escaped me. A laugh, quiet and airless.
It made them both stunned.
“Kevin,” I said, my eyes locking with his, each word deliberate. “You will regret this.”
“Regret what?” he sneered. “What grand delusions are you spinning now?”
“Kevin,” Teresa chimed in, her voice a theatrical whisper, “she doesn’t actually believe that nonsense about being the Horizon Capital heiress, does she?”
A derisive smirk stretched his lips. Teresa rolled her eyes, the picture of someone enduring a pathetic joke.
The expressions of mockery had not yet fully settled—
O
Before I could speak, a voice, calm yet urgent, cut through the lobby. It carried an authority that demanded silence.
“Ms. Watson.”
All heads turned.
A man in exquisitely tailored dark wool, his features sharp behind gold-rimmed glasses, was striding toward us. His presence was like a sudden drop in pressure.
Two equally severe assistants moved in his wake, both in sharp suits, briefcases in hand, their expressions set in the same practiced, unblinking professionalism.
A sharp intake of breath came from a senior employee, followed by a hushed whisper. “Is that… Mr. Loggins?”
Charles Loggins. Chief Secretary of Horizon Capital’s board-a man Kevin had schemed for months to meet, only to be denied even a business card. One of the shadowed powers who orchestrated the daily workings of a colossal empire.
Charles ignored everyone else, his gaze finding me with unerring precision.
He strode directly to me, and under the weight of countless stunned stares, he did something that froze the air in the lobby. He inclined his torso in a slight, yet profoundly respectful bow.
“Ms. Watson.”
The two words detonated in the silence.

I saw Teresa’s smile solidify, then crack into a mask of pure absurdity.
The low murmur of employees died instantly. Everyone stood suspended.

As if unaware of the cataclysm he’d caused, Charles continued in that unnervingly level tone. “The Chairman has been concerned. Your three-year sabbatical has left critical matters awaiting your direct approval.”
He gestured slightly. An assistant stepped forward, the briefcase opening with a click. A single, impeccably bound document was presented to me with both hands.
“Per the Chairman’s directive and corporate bylaws,” Charles’ voice cut through the dead air, “your leave is formally concluded. These are your equity confirmation and presidential authority. For your review.”
“The… Chairman? Presidential authority?” an employee stammered, thick with disbelief.
Only then did Charles slowly lift his eyes. His gaze swept over Kevin, whose face had gone the color of old paper, and Teresa, who seemed to be listing on her feet. It was the cold scan of an instrument assessing insignificant data points.
Finally, his focus returned to me, the deference undiminished. “The car is waiting, Ms. Watson. Regarding this establishment,” he paused, the word heavy with implication, “where you’ve been conducting your field study…”
