Chapter 81
Sienna and Clayton had been married for three years. If he had ever paid attention to her actual birthday, he would know that Sienna and Olive weren’t born on the same day.
Sienna’s birthday was a month later. At Olive’s one–month celebration years ago, Daphne had thoughtfully suggested a dual celebration for the sisters. She claimed it would be livelier that way.
It happened again the following year. From then on, Sienna never had her own birthday again.
Every year, Olive’s birthday was a grand affair. The family announced to the public that the sisters coincidentally shared the same birthday.
And yet Sienna wasn’t even allowed to blow out the candles. She stood on the sidelines like she didn’t belong.
Eventually, she simply claimed she hated birthdays and never celebrated them, as though feigning indifference could hide the sting.
She was like a child no one loved, desperate for the tiniest scrap of care.
Yet, she poured her whole heart into preparing for Clayton’s birthday. She carefully selected the best gifts and planned every detail to make every year memorable.
She gave him the birthdays she had always wished someone would give her.
Clayton only heard the rumor that Sienna and Olive shared a birthday. Every year on that day, he would have his assistant pick up some random luxury item to give her.
She used to foolishly hope that he would one day learn her actual birthday and surprise her.
But three years had passed in disappointment.
A wave of exhaustion washed over her, especially after catching Daphne’s probing eyes. She turned without a word and
walked away.
“Are you deaf?” Clayton strode after her and grabbed her by the wrist. “I asked if you wanted a birthday party.”
Sienna’s heart twisted into a knot.
If she revealed her actual birthday to him right now, she would sound like a pathetic beggar craving sympathy.
It would be like saying, “Look at me. I’ve never had a real birthday in my life.”
She refused to expose such vulnerability to Clayton, lest she be met with his merciless ridicule.
“No need,” she heard herself say, her voice coarse. “I’ve hated birthdays since I was a kid.”
He frowned. “How strange.”
“I guess I’m strange like that.” She forced a crooked smile. “My birth is nothing worth celebrating.”
After all, her existence had never been welcomed.
Had she been born a boy, maybe her mother wouldn’t have been thrown out.
Just then, Miles appeared out of nowhere, his tone dripping with mockery as he said, “Well, well, well, Sienna Winger. Didn’t expect you to be so self–aware. You hate birthdays, hey?
“Please, it’s only an excuse you made up because no one cares about you. Your sister shares your birthday yet outshines you. You must feel so humiliated, huh?”
He leaned close maliciously and sneered, “Besides, what right does a bastard daughter have to celebrate birthdays? You

shouldn’t have been born in the first place. What are you celebrating? Your mom being a mistress everyone despised?”
His words pierced her heart like keen blades, but she couldn’t refute them. Her eyes stung, and she had to flee before her tears escaped.
Clayton moved to follow her, but Miles seized his arm. “Don’t bother, Clayton. She’s just playing the victim card to get your attention. She wants you to celebrate her birthday. It’s a classic push–and–pull trick.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the lights in the banquet hall went out. Darkness surged like a tide, plunging the room into a wave of startled cries.
In the chaos, Sienna stumbled forward and bumped into a waiter.
With a crash, icy champagne soaked her dress. She slipped, falling heavily to the floor.
Pain flared in her knee, and the hem of her dress clung to her legs.
