Chapter 79
Wilfred and Daphne had been classmates in university. They were young and in love. However, Wilfred’s mother, Marjorie Ashford, disapproved of Daphne’s modest family background.
She pulled all sorts of tricks to obstruct the couple’s relationship at every turn. Ultimately, Daphne vanished from Wilfred’s life without a trace, leaving only a letter behind.
Heartbroken and determined to spite his mother, Wilfred turned his attention to his subordinate, Eleanor Finch.
Eleanor was gentle, quiet, and unfailingly obedient. The two got married quickly. Even so, Marjorie remained dissatisfied and went so far as to cut off his financial support.
The newlyweds moved out of the family home and squeezed into a small apartment in the western part of the city. Not long after, Eleanor became pregnant. Only then did Marjorie reluctantly relent.
“If she gives birth to a boy, she’ll be recognized as part of the family.”
But fate didn’t comply. The baby was a girl. After that, the couple tried desperately for a son, but Eleanor’s belly remained flat. Their days grew more and more difficult, filled with mutual blame and resentment.
When Sienna was five, Wilfred had an affair. He reunited with Daphne and rekindled their old feelings.
Gradually, he stopped coming home. Eleanor cried herself hollow. Finally, one evening, she took little Sienna by the hand and walked out the door.
That day, the fiery sunset painted half the sky red. Sienna looked up in amazement and exclaimed, “Mom, the sky is on fire!”
But when she turned, she was only met with her mother’s vacant expression. She couldn’t understand why there was no light in Eleanor’s eyes.
Eleanor took Sienna to Daphne’s place.
The door opened to Daphne, who was five months pregnant. There was a ten–year–old boy beside her.
The two women got into a fierce argument. Eleanor sobbed and screamed hysterically, while Daphne merely rested a hand on her belly and watched her coldly like a joke.
Sienna stood there in confusion, unable to grasp how she suddenly had siblings–an older brother and a younger sister on the way.
Eventually, Marjorie ordered a DNA test for the boy. When the results confirmed everything, Daphne married into the Hale family with great fanfare.
Meanwhile, Eleanor disappeared.
Some said she jumped into the sea. Others claimed she ran off with another man. Whatever the truth, she never returned.
Sienna was forced to live with her father. In that new household, however, she became an awkward, unwelcome presence.
Soon, rumors followed.
“I heard Sienna’s mother was the mistress.”
“Sienna and her brother don’t share the same mother.”
“Doesn’t that make her an illegitimate child?”
Sienna felt little attachment to that family. As she looked at the couple before her now, her voice was cool and distant. “Say what you need to say.”
Wilfred’s brows drew together. As he spoke, the anger simmering beneath his words was evident. “What kind of attitude was

that just now? You didn’t even greet me in front of your mother–in–law. Is this how I raised you?

“Do you think you can ignore your father now that you’ve married into the Hale family? Do you think you’re too grown for rules, huh? Since when do parents have to tiptoe around their children?”
“I tiptoed around you plenty when I was younger,” Sienna replied with a soft laugh, though her eyes held no warmth.
“Now it’s your turn. Isn’t that only fair? Besides, it’s not like the family’s short of a daughter. You’ve got a son and another daughter. One less daughter won’t make a difference.”
Daphne let out a delicate sigh, her expression arranged to show just the perfect amount of concern. She reached out to take Sienna’s hand, but the latter subtly dodged it.
Daphne didn’t falter; instead, she offered a tolerant smile. “Enna, how could you say that? No matter what, we’re all family.”
She paused, her tone earnest and gentle. “It’s fine if you resent me. I understand you don’t see me as your mother. But your father is bound to you by blood. He endured so many hardships while he raised you. How hurt do you think he must feel when he hears you say things like this?”
What a masterful move–with those gentle words, she was turning the tables on Sienna!
